Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

In addition to the integration of content outside the scope of traditional fields, there are also accelerated and intensified approaches to the digitalisation of teaching, including the first models of digital examination formats, due to the pandemic.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The Master's degree programme with double degree offered in cooperation with Tongji University, Shanghai, PR China is being discontinued. In its place, the much more up-to-date and career-related RePIC degree programme is offered under the UNIC umbrella, providing students with more opportunities for experiences abroad. Erasmus and internationalisation officers support students who are interested in stays abroad. The compulsory excursions within the degree programmes predominantly have objectives in other European and non-European countries and are preferred by the students.

Exchange universities for stay abroads

University of Oulu, Fin; ERASMUS-University Rotterdam, NL; University College Cork, Ire; Université Joseph Fourier in Grenoble, F; Univerzita Palackého in Olomouc, CZ; Universitá di Verona, I; University of Deusto, E; Universidad de Zaragoza, E; University of Tartu, EE; Olomouc, CZ

Special features regarding the equipment

The GI maintains permanent hydrological and climatological measuring stations, mobile measurement facilities and a climate sensor bus. These are complemented by other mobile measuring devices, a physical geography lab equipped with extensive state-of-the-art field and lab equipment, a wide range of PC workstations and a media teaching lab with a notebook kiosk. Literature databases are provided by the university library. As part of our climate protection effort, crowdsourcing of air temperatures with bicycles – crowd biking – has been set up. A teaching server allows for distance-learning courses that are independent of the computing power of the student terminals.

Special features regarding research activities

Human-environmental relationships in urban regions form the main research focus of geography at Bochum. Physical Geography, Human Geography, Geomatics and specialised didactics successfully attract third party-funded projects in their respective core areas. In addition, they also cooperate with other departments on the Institute's shared research focus "Transformation of Urban Landscapes". Within the research, numerous stimuli are provided by the campus university, as well as the possibilities for cooperation within the framework of the University Alliance Ruhr.

Other special features

The decentralised diversity officers are contact persons at the faculty in cases of discrimination. They advise or refer those affected to suitable counselling centres. They work to ensure that diversity is perceived and taken into account in a targeted manner in all areas of the faculty. They provide information, point out grievances and are committed to ensuring that the diversity of university life is perceived and appreciated as an asset. They work closely with the anti-discrimination body and the Equal Opportunities Office and are also involved in committee work.
