Large number of seminars, exercises and practicals in small groups. Results in close contact between students and teachers. Large number of blended learning elements in teaching, such as geocaching, serious games, virtual sandbox, audio slidecasts for lectures, inverted classroom concepts.

Large number of seminars, exercises and practicals in small groups, which enables a close exchange between students and teachers. Integration of blended learning elements in teaching, such as geocaching, serious games, virtual sandbox, audio slidecasts for lectures, inverted classroom concepts. Significant practical relevance thanks to the involvement of students in current research projects, especially in the study programmes' core and advanced modules.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Interdisciplinary Erasmus partnerships with in the field of Geosciences; Students are encouraged to complete internships abroad beyond the semester abroad / New special English course for "Scientific Writing", in particular for geography students in cooperation with the Writing Centre of the RWTH / courses regularly taught in English and bilingually / international research and partner universities are actively involved in courses, in particular in the regional module (excursion); GMIT/GUTECH/IIT Madras as special teaching constellations (universities in Mongolia/Oman/ India.

Special features regarding the equipment

Geomorphology/Geo-Ecology: Physical/geographical lab for sedimentological-pedological sample analyses, X-ray fluorescence analysis, range of drilling machinery including core saw, laser particle sizer, colour spectral analysis, CHNS analyser, pH metres, photometry, and a wide-range of microscopes; Climatology: Two permanent automatic weather stations at two regional sites, five mobile automatic weather stations, three fine dust measuring instruments, two ultrasonic anemometers, ice-steam drill, vertical captive balloon probe as well as various mobile measuring sensors for atmospheric measurements. CIP cluster: Remote sensing/ GIS Software, etc.

Special features regarding research activities

The research activities combine fundamental work with a decided application-oriented focus. In addition to basic research with DFG or BMBF funding, many practical projects are also carried out in the form of contract research for external, usually public (e.g. local authority) users of the developed knowledge. Some students are already involved in these projects at an early stage. Particular focus is placed on research with an international (e.g. Collaborative Research Centre SFB) or euregional orientation (various EU Interreg-funded projects).

Other special features

In the course of the Geography colloquium, a new course on Gender & Diversity was set up, which will be expanded to include critical/feminist geographical topics. / Geographic migration/diversity research is spearheaded by junior professors/lecturers in research. / Lecture series on sustainability with internal and external lecturers was awarded a sustainability award within the university. / Sustainability is covered in all sub-areas of the degree programme. / Introduction of a new interdisciplinary specialisation module "Sustainability in Geography".
