Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

We will train you to become a highly sought-after specialist in the field of computer science, applied computer science or IT security. We provide first-year students with significant support, e.g. through tutorials. We promote students' professional skills through career fairs, compulsory internships at companies and a wide range of English-language courses with highly relevant topics, such as machine learning, data science, IT security and quantum computing. Students are taught by top international researchers who develop globally recognised standards (e.g. in the area of post-quantum cryptography).

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

In research-oriented courses, students are taught by top international researchers who develop globally recognised standards (e.g. in the field of post-quantum cryptography). Our master's degree programmes have very few compulsory courses, so you can design your studies from a wide range of courses (e.g. software security, energy-aware computing systems or autonomous vehicles and AI) based on your personal interests. In addition, there is a large selection of electives that allow you to strengthen your soft skills, such as foreign language skills and personal management.

Special features regarding the international orientation

All degree programmes offer a wide range of courses taught in English. Many teachers are international scientists, so all degree programmes offer a wide range of courses taught in English. The MSc course in Computer Science is even exclusively taught in English. The university is steadily expanding its partnerships with international universities for studying abroad purposes. As part of the UNIC university network, RUB students benefit from the versatile course offerings of the 10 international member universities.

Exchange universities for stay abroads

Special features regarding the equipment

For research and teaching, the faculty has modern computer pools with monitors that can be lowered into the desk, a humanoid robot arm, 5 TurtleBot robots for researching autonomous driving, a VR/AR laboratory with two VR headsets, a Microsoft Hololens 2, a Living Lab for simulating IoT environments in private households, and more. There is also a rapid prototyping laboratory with 3D printers, a laser cutter and a soldering workstation for creating new user interfaces.

Special features regarding research activities

Our faculty's research is international, interdisciplinary and recognized worldwide. It is home to the renowned Horst Görtz Institute for IT Security including a Cluster of Excellence and the Institute for Neuroinformatics. For years, Bochum has been regarded as a hotspot for IT and, in addition to large industrial companies, attracts other first-class research institutions to the region, such as the Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy and the Centre for Advanced Internet Studies, providing (young) scientists with the best conditions for top research.

Other special features

As one of the largest universities in Germany with over 40,000 students, RUB deals intensively with the topics of sustainability and diversity. Regardless of cultural or biographical background, everyone can get involved in everyday university life. To that end, the vice-chancellor's office ensures diversity, inclusivity and talent development. Our students have the opportunity to acquire a sustainability certificate and to participate in campaigns such as Sustainability Week. Our research also contributes to sustainability, for example, research on energy-efficient computing.
