Special features regarding teaching

The central component of the dentistry degree programme in the Faculty of Medicine is the combination of theoretical knowledge and scientific competence with practical skills to prevent, educate, diagnose, plan treatment and therapy as part of synoptic, patient-related treatment plan. Curricular content is taught on an interdisciplinary basis depending on the subject. The aim of this course is to train dentists who are able to practice dentistry independently, as well as to allow them to continue their continuing education and training.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Within the framework of the partnerships with Riga Stadins University and Prague Charles University, the degree programme in Dentistry offers students of the UMR an ERASMUS stay abroad in Riga, Latvia (courses taught in English, max. 5 months, 2 exchange places) or in Prague, Czech Republic (courses taught in English, max. 12 months, 4 exchange places). Through stays abroad, students can get to know other study and care systems, learn/deepen a foreign language, organise a research stay and expand their personal horizons of experience.

Special features regarding the equipment

State-of-the-art digital dental diagnostic procedures and treatment units; Student access to digital imaging procedures / digital performance documentation at the workstations, training on haptic VR simulators in dental surgery (Kobra Oral Surgery Simulator) and cavity preparation in conservative dentistry/prosthodontics (Simodont Dental Trainer), training in digital manufacturing processes for dental restoration (e.g. CAD/CAM), learning digital workflows (intraoral scan, model scan, computer-aided design, 3D printing) in the digital laboratory, Looop software.

Special features regarding research activities

Research focus on biomedical engineering and biomaterials at the University Medical Centre Rostock ("HEALTHTECH MEDICINE - medicine meets technology") - Research and implementation of novel implant systems, combination points and biomaterials as well as the research and development of medical therapy and diagnostic systems: Sub-project of the Collaborative Research Centre ELAINE; HOGEMA sub-projects; Interdisciplinary (ZMK) oriented cell biology laboratory (cell biology/biomaterials/biomedical engineering), interventional health care research (Project Response).

Other special features

The Diversity Unit in the vice-chancellor's office supports the development of the university in the overarching fields of diversity management and equal opportunity, welcome culture, inclusion and accessibility, health management, family friendliness, equality and sustainability development. Targeted support for (up-and-coming) scientists at the University Hospital of Rostock: Mentoring programme "KarriereWegeMentoring" for resident physicians and specialists; Sustainability: Sustainable purchasing and procurement, energy class-based, waste separation.
