Special features regarding teaching

DEL: DNA-encoded libraries, enhancement of DEL response capabilities: chemically stabilised DNA; Technologies for new active substances on the basis of nucleic acids: Research is focused on the development of new compounds with new properties such as lipid mixtures, chemically modified lipids and novel nucleotides, polymers and substitutes for PEGylated lipids that are stable, safe and biodegradable. The use of these compounds could make it possible to add active compounds (drugs) to tissues and/or organs.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Würzburg Pharmacy maintains a strong network of cooperations between international universities, research institutions and other partners, such as the pharmaceutical industry. Our students also have the opportunity to complete a semester abroad as part of the Erasmus exchange programme at one of our 14 partner universities.

Special features regarding the equipment

The Institute for Pharmacy and Food Chemistry is accommodated in a new building since 2009. Next door to the research laboratories are modern equipped rooms for practicals available for the students, which are used already in stage I studies. As part of project work, students are given the opportunity to utilise the most modern analytical large-scale items of equipment in all areas. Numerous subject-specific pharmaceutical databases are licensed for the department and are available to students for research.

Special features regarding research activities

In many inter-disciplinary research collaborations between various natural and life sciences, Pharmacy at Würzburg forms the link. For example, it focuses on infection research, new approaches for the treatment of cancers, the study of plant-pathogen interactions, the research into receptor dynamic as a paradigm for new drugs and new polymers for bioconjugation to therapeutic proteins.

Other special features

The academic chairs in the Pharmacy department are established in three faculties in Würzburg: the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy, the Faculty of Biology and the Faculty of Medicine. This enables outstanding interaction opportunities and contact involvement with Chemistry, Biology and Medicine in teaching and research.
