Special features regarding teaching

Integration of new research directions, such as bioinformatics, into research and teaching with the university's own professors. Students can switch laterally from BSc degree programmes to the master's programme. Choice of two profile lines in the Master's degree programme. For students who pass the state examinations, there is the option of an additional diploma in pharmacy as well as a two-semester qualification via the master's degree programme profile line "Regulatory Affairs & Drug Development". During the course of study, students can switch between the various courses of study.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Through planned internships abroad in the Master's degree course, the international orientation plays an influential role in the programme. Many of the master's and doctoral students at the international postgraduate schools are originally from abroad. All work groups are therefore strongly internationally oriented (also through numerous international research cooperations, visits abroad, and international guests). Through theses and internships in the various work groups, students engage in a constant exchange with international scientists.

Special features regarding the equipment

In addition to the modern lab equipment in the various pharmaceutical disciplines which is available to the students, the individual work groups use numerous measuring apparatus for current research projects. This includes, for example, NMR, LC-MS/MS, GC-MS, FTIR and VCD for analytical measurements, high-throughput assays for cellular tests or fermenters for biotechnological applications. With the bwForCluster there is a computer cluster available for virtual screening. Modern calorimetric measuring procedures were recently established in Pharmaceutical Technology (e.g. ITC).

Special features regarding research activities

Research is one of the main pillars of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Freiburg. In addition to a large number of projects funded by the DFG (German Research Foundation), there are ongoing cooperative research projects e.g. in the field of epigenetic agent development (Collaborative Research Centre 992) or in the study of molecular membrane transport processes (DFG Research Group 2202). A new professorship was added in the field of Bioanalysis, creating additional research fields.

Other special features

Sustainable pharmacy is a new focus of training in the pharmaceutical sciences in Freiburg. The principles of green chemistry are taught in our courses. In workshops, under the instruction of lecturers, students discuss how sustainable pharmacy can be established (contact: Prof. Michael Müller).
