Special features regarding teaching

In Braunschweig, theory, pharmaceutical practice and science are closely linked. During the programme, medicinal substances are synthesised and analysed, medicinal plants are identified and medicinal products are produced. The practice of drug therapies is studied in the training pharmacy and in cooperation with the clinic, and acquired knowledge is applied and expanded as part of a project that is unique in Germany, the PJ Academy, together with medical students. A course highlight is the afternoon of research, during which students present the results of their own research.

Special features regarding the international orientation

In Braunschweig, there are excellent opportunities for studying abroad at eight European universities in seven countries (Belgium, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, Spain) as part of Erasmus cooperations. There are worldwide exchanges for students, doctoral students and lecturers with universities and research institutions in numerous countries, including Great Britain, France, Sweden, the USA, Japan, China and New Zealand. Students regularly report on their international research stays during the "Nachmittag der Forschung" event.

Special features regarding the equipment

Owing to close cooperation with the Centre for Pharmaceutical Process Engineering, we have excellent equipment, including equipment for testing tissue constructs as substitutes for animal experimentation. The institute also has sophisticated devices for imaging and high-resolution methods, cell culture laboratories and pilot plants for drug formulation. The pharmacy information service provides licences for pharmaceutical literature and databases, operates the PubPharm platform with more than 55 million publications and provides numerous pharmaceutical textbooks as e-books.

Special features regarding research activities

Braunschweig is the centre for molecular active ingredient research and pharmaceutical drug development. Current projects involve drug design and analysis, biologically produced drugs and nanostructured drug carriers. Important projects on drugs for special diseases (cardiovascular, diabetes, cancer, infections) are ongoing. Projects also include pharmaceutical history topics and alternatives to animal experiments. Close cooperation partners are the Centre for Pharmaceutical Process Engineering, the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research as well as international companies and research organisations.

Other special features

In addition to the hard facts (close proximity to research centres, the specialist pharmacy information service, excellent location), the pharmacy studies in Braunschweig are characterized by the close cooperation of scientists, working groups and institutions as well as teachers and students. This creates a pleasant collegial working atmosphere, which leads to positive results in teaching and research and contributes to the high number of graduates at the Braunschweig location.
