The Institute of Pharmacy at Freie Universität Berlin is the only higher education institution in Berlin and Brandenburg that offers a degree programme in pharmacy. Research and teaching are closely linked with the Berlin research landscape, in particular with the Charité. The range of courses includes a number of practicals, which take place in state-of-the-art laboratories. This gives students the opportunity to gain practical experience in all areas of pharmaceutical work.

Our institute often hosts students as part of the Erasmus programme, whereby it is possible to involve foreign students in all theoretical and practical courses by arrangement. A proportion of between 5 and 10% of our students take the opportunity to spend a semester abroad during their course of study or after the second part of the pharmaceutical examination. We have particularly close contacts with the University of Gainesville/Florida.

All course rooms are equipped with modern communication and presentation technology. The practicals and research labs are in line with international standards, the technical equipment for laboratory practicals is continuously updated and adapted to the factors of modern education. We attach great importance to comprehensive occupational and health protection – all labs have been modernised in this regard.

The research at the Institute relates both to drugs and patients. Due to the close networking, the institute has two graduate programmes (PharMetriX and BB3R) and carries out joint research projects with the DFG, the EU and the Excellence Initiative. The research spectrum comprises the Isolation and Characterisation of Biogenic Agents, Analysis of Biomarkers and Drugs, Modelling, Synthesis and Testing of Active Substances, studies on the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of active agents used clinically as well as the pharmaceutical-technological aspects of drug targeting.

The Institute of Pharmacy has a high proportion of foreign students who contribute to joint academic success on the basis of tolerance and mutual support. This is supported by the international doctoral candidates, who advise students and serve as contact persons for students with the same mother tongue in case of problems.
