Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Jump-start for new students: Preparatory mathematics course, introductory week; Additional tutorials From the beginning, very good contact between students of different semesters. Small sizes for exercises and internships; Good facilities; Very good teacher-student ratio; Good cooperation between teaching staff and students; Regular teaching evaluation. Good coordination of teaching content. Wide range of elective options, from computer science to languages to astronomy and astrophysics. Bachelor's theses on current research topics.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Six elective courses of study with well thought-out compulsory elective module catalogues which are closely linked to the research fields at the institute; However, individual course design is also possible. Close connection between theoretical and experimental physics in the modules. Good facilities. very good staff-student ratio; Good cooperation between teaching staff and students; Regular teaching evaluation. Research phase in the third and fourth semesters with master's theses on current research topics of the working groups and associated institutes.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The University of Rostock has numerous partnerships with universities in Europe within the framework of the ERASMUS+ programme. The contracts are concluded between the individual departments and supervised by the departmental coordinators (currently around ten in the field of physics). Students are involved in international research cooperations of the work groups, the proportion of students of a class who take advantage of this option for exchange is about 20 percent.

Exchange universities for stay abroads

Stockholm University, Schweden; Luleå University of Technology, Schweden; Umeå University, Schweden; Lettische Uni Riga (LV), Lettland; University of Southern Denmark, Dänemark; Universite de Bordeaux, Frankreich; Université Grenoble Alpes, Frankreich; University of Maribor, Slowenien; University of Aarhus, Dänemark; University of Wroclaw; Polen

Special features regarding the equipment

In 2015 a new research and lecture hall building opened. The complex also contains a laboratory building for the "Life, Light and Matter" department of the interdisciplinary faculty. Equipment: Ultra-short pulse laser systems including pulse formation, high resolution laser spectroscopy, scanning microscope with atomic resolution, low temperature cryostate bath, helium (nano-)droplet isolation spectroscopy, preparation lab, high performance computing cluster. Multimedia lecture halls and seminar rooms, student workrooms are available.

Special features regarding research activities

SFB 1477: Light-matter interactions at interfaces employing strong ultrafast fields and special targets. International research training group 2676: Quantum optics, ultrafast electron dynamics, and electronic coherence. Projects in the department of "Life, Light and Matter" of the interdisciplinary faculty. Three Leibnitz Institutes: Atmospheric Physics (Kühlungsborn), Baltic Sea Research (Warnemünde), Plasma Research and Technology (Greifswald). DLR Institute of Solar Terrestrial Physics (Neustrelitz).

Other special features

The Diversity Unit in the vice-chancellor's office supports strategic development in the fields of diversity management and equal opportunity, welcome culture, inclusion, accessibility, health management, family friendliness, equality and sustainability development.
