Further information provided by the department

Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Broad education in all areas of biology. Research placements in the fields of ecology and cell biology/physiology. Periods abroad are promoted.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Broad range of research-related modules for compulsory electives. Courses are taught on the basis of the faculty's research focus.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The Department of Biology has integrated a "mobility window" as an elective module into the curriculum for all courses of study. This facilitates the recognition of study achievements at other institutions during a mobility period. The department has organized exchange programs with the Universidad de Costa Rica (for students in Biology) and with the National Taiwan University (for Master's students in Biology & Biochemistry). New Erasmus cooperation partnership with 7 partners from 5 countries (EcoSocMan) with a joint online course and international summer school.

Exchange universities for stay abroads

Abo Akademi, Finnland; Universitetet Stavanger, Norwegen; Tallina Ülikool, Tallinn, Estland; Aix-Marseille Université, Frankreich; German University in Cairo, Ägypten; ITMO, St. Petersburg, Russland; Huazhong University, China; Universidad de Costa Rica; National Taiwan University, Taiwan; California State University, USA

Special features regarding the equipment

The research-focused specialisation modules in the department's Master's degree courses enable direct access and training on numerous large-scale devices in the department, e.g. bioreactors, protein purification devices, spectrometers, fluorescence and electron microscopes, crystallisation chambers, sequencers, GC-MS, and much more. In addition, the Department of Biology has access to, among other things, the Core Facility for Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics, the Central Facility for Electron Microscopy, and bwForCluster JUSTUS 2.

Special features regarding research activities

All work groups focus on the research area of the department, namely stress response & resilience of biological systems. In teaching, reference is made to the research focus of the department. There is a strong connection to the industrial environment, especially in the BioPharma Cluster South Germany.

Other special features

Biodiversity and sustainability are integrated into the degree courses of the Department of Biology.
