Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

In the Master's degree programme in Biology, students have complete freedom of choice from the entire breadth of the subject: Aquatic and Terrestrial Ecology, Biodiversity and Evolution, Molecular Physiology and Developmental Biology, Genetics and Microbiology, Cell Biology; Very high proportion of practical laboratory exercises throughout the entire course of study. Students can apply nearly 50% of the credit points to their own area of focus. Due to the wide range of subjects offered, it is well suited for students who are still considering a specialisation.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Biology in Kiel underscores its international orientation through numerous collaborations in research as well as the international degree course MAMBE (Molecular Biology and Evolution), which is taught in English.

Special features regarding research activities

The Biology department is involved in three main research areas of the DFG: In "Kiel Life Science", research is carried out into processes with which living beings react to environmental influences, in "Kiel Marine Science" the ocean system is investigated, and in "Kiel Nano, Surface & Interface Science" research is carried out on a nanoscale. Members of the Biology Department lead the "Kiel Evolution Centre" in which research is carried out in conjunction with the "Forschungszentrum Borstel", the "MPI für Evolutionary Biology" in Plön, the CRC "Origin and Function of Metaorganisms" and the Cluster of Excellence "Precision Medicine in Chronic Inflammation".
