Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

With more than 50%, the bachelor's degree programme in Biology offers a high degree of practical training. The Bachelor's degree programme offers an extensive range of subjects, preparing students for the consecutive Master's courses more generally in the first two years and more specifically in the third year with freely selectable compulsory elective modules. It is subject to a quality assurance system. Close contact is cultivated to companies and practitioners.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

With nearly 75%, the department offers a high degree of practical training in each of the Master's degree programmes. The Master's courses are internationally and research-oriented. The modular structure ensures that students have the opportunity to put into practice the theory taught in the lectures as much as possible. During the practicals, students gain deep insight into the current research of their lecturers. All degree courses are subject to a quality assurance system. Close contact is cultivated to companies and practitioners.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Every year, the English-language Master's courses attract a high percentage (approx. 50%) of international students who are prepared for studying in the department through welcoming structures and information events. Student mentors help international students find housing or deal with bureaucratic regulations. Mobility windows and moderate recognition procedures guarantee students enrolled in Jena a simplified procedure for international studies in other countries.

Special features regarding research activities

Research in the Faculty of Life and Biosciences focuses on the three areas of microbial communication, biodiversity and evolution and the regulation of aging-associated processes. There is close cooperation between non-university research institutes, e.g. HKI, FLI and also MPIs with Friedrich Schiller University Jena. The integration into ongoing research projects, e.g. iDiv, offers students excellent conditions for internships, preparation of a final thesis and a subsequent doctoral and postdoctoral phase.

Other special features

Of particular note are the numerous CRCs, such as FungiNet, AquaDiva and ChemBioSys, as well as the Cluster of Excellence Balance of the Microverse, the iDIV, the Jena experiment as the largest biodiversity experiment in Europe and IMPLULS for ageing research. In addition, close cooperation with the Leibniz Institutes HKI, FLI and IPHT, Jenoptik and Zeiss enable the development of the latest applications, e.g. in the fields of Photonics and Microscopy for biological and biomedical research.
