Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

In the bachelor's degree programme, emphasis is placed on problem-oriented learning. Alternative teaching concepts ("beyond lectures") are developed and opportunities are presented for individual study design. The "Humboldt Reloaded" project enables students to participate in current research projects during their foundational studies. The close cooperation between the Faculties of Agricultural and Natural Sciences opens up a wide range of subjects for students, from teaching on Germany's largest experimental sites to working at the Natural History Museum to microbiome research activities in the laboratory.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

In the Master's degree programme in Biology at the University of Hohenheim, students individually shape their path, be it broadly based or with a focus on agricultural biology, biodiversity, integrative taxonomy, biomolecular interactions or plant adaptation. Students obtain practical training through state-of-the-art laboratories, interdisciplinary projects and international collaborations. Excursions, guest lectures and participation in research projects as well as internships in companies provide a holistic insight into biology and prepare students for a variety of professional challenges.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The department is characterised by a strong international orientation through its cooperation with the Erasmus+ programme for study purposes in programme countries (KA 131), the Swiss-European Mobility Programme and exchange programmes overseas and at state programmes in Baden-Württemberg. Exchange students and free movers are offered semester packages with various topics in English.

Special features regarding the equipment

The department is characterised by having excellent technical facilities. In particular, the "Hohenheim Centre for Livestock Microbiome Research" has state-of-the-art special laboratories with in vitro tissue engineering as well as sophisticated large-scale equipment. These allow laboratory experiments to be carried out on animal feed, biological samples from livestock, cell tissues and microorganisms. In addition, the department offers access to subject-specific databases that students and researchers can use for their work.

Special features regarding research activities

In the research area of biology/life and biosciences in Hohenheim, the focus is on the principles of microbial, plant, and animal life. The department emphasizes biological interactions, whether between organisms and their animate and inanimate environments or between organs or cells, which are mediated by biomolecular interactions. With support from institutions such as the Agricultural Experiment Station, the KomBioTa and the state institutes for beekeeping and seed breeding, a wide range of methods in research is made possible.

Other special features

Bioeconomy is the leading topic at the University of Hohenheim with an emphasis on the sustainable use of biological resources. In this area in particular, the university creates a diverse and inclusive environment. Diversity refers not only to the biological diversity of the life forms studied, but also to the cultural and individual diversity of the people who work on them. These diverse perspectives promote innovative approaches and solutions in the field of Life Sciences that contribute to meeting the challenges of the modern world.
