Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Broad-based training programme; Strong practical orientation of the courses; Diverse opportunities for creating individual profiles. Recognising work placements in industry or research institutions in Germany and abroad as coursework helps give our students insight into potential fields of work at an early stage.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

In the first semester, students take orientation modules in three areas of their choice before deciding on a specialisation for the rest of their master's degree programme. This promotes an interdisciplinary approach that is highly appreciated by future employers. In addition, all students have an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the teaching culture and the various research areas before specialising in a specific area. The second year will mainly take place in the research laboratories of the faculty and affiliated research institutions.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Participation in the trinational degree programme in Biotechnology with the participation of the Universities of Strasbourg, Basel and Freiburg.

Special features regarding the equipment

Core facilities: Signalling Factory; Robotics; Life Imaging Centre

Special features regarding research activities

Students spend a lot of time in the research laboratories of the lecturers involved in the degree course and benefit from the excellent life and biosciences research landscape in Freiburg with the clusters of excellence BIOSS, BLBT, CIBSS and livMatS, several collaborative research centres, as well as postgraduate schools. The close integration of the Faculty of Biology with the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Environment and Natural Resources, the technical faculty and the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics provides a range of opportunities for internships and theses.

Other special features

The livMatS Cluster of Excellence is researching nature-inspired material systems that adapt to environmental conditions and generate clean energy from the environment. The Sustainability Certificate offers students the opportunity of integrating sustainability into their degree course with an interdisciplinary and practice-oriented approach, regardless of field of study. The University of Freiburg considers equality and diversity to be a cross-cutting task that affects all areas of the university.
