Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Bachelor's: Profile developed in the third academic year; Development and application of innovative teaching concepts such as research-based learning, close integration of biological and non-biological subject matter, early integration into working groups. Teachers from local research institutions are involved in the teaching programmes. Students can study modules at affiliated or foreign research institutes. The department participates in several post-graduate and graduate colloquia. External internships in Germany or abroad are supported and recognised.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Research orientation; Learning through Research; flat hierarchies/proximity to students; Wide variety of options; International environment; Partnerships with research institutions (especially marine biology); Master's in Neurosciences: connection with Mind Media Machines (MMM) scientific network; Specialisation in computational or experimental neurosciences possible; Master's in Marine Microbiology: fast-track in three semesters, doctoral programme guarantee; Master's in Ecology: concept-oriented; Master's in Marine Biology: Specialisation in Aquatic Tropical Ecology (ISATEC) possible.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The international focus of all Master's degree programmes (English-language) means that around half of all students come from abroad, giving the department a very international flair. The mobility window in the fifth semester of the Bachelor's degree course is used intensively, particularly under the scope of Erasmus partnerships. Since 2020, more and more Erasmus internships have been advertised, which are also recognised in subject-specific studies. "Intercultural work" is a format for group work by German and international students.

Special features regarding the equipment

Confocal laser scanning microscope with AiryScan (NW2, A3372); Scanning electron microscope (Equipment Centre); Atomic force microscopy (Physics); 7T MRI system: Bruker BioSpec 70/20 USR with Avance III electronics (location:FB02); 3T magnetic resonance device "MAGNETOM Vida Fit" (Cognium).

Special features regarding research activities

Life and biosciences explore interactions of biological systems at different organizational levels (molecule to ecosystem) along two interconnected pillars: "Marine ecosystem research" includes the life and bioscience component of the excellent scientific focus on marine, polar and climate research including ecology (in close cooperation with the partner institutes ZMT, MPI, AWI and TI), and ; "synthetic biology" links the interdisciplinary research of molecular and neuroscience with physics, technomathematics and materials & engineering sciences (MeVis cooperation).

Other special features

Family-friendly range of courses: Students are supported in combining studies and family responsibilities. We offer: Changing table, internships with alternative dates, counselling on individual degree course structure, compulsory courses between 9:00 and 16:00 if possible, dates set for examinations and practicals early on. Disadvantage IT Support compensation for international students (e.g., extension of time needed for written examinations in German or examinations in English).
