Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The Biosciences are extremely practically oriented. Far more than 50% of teaching consists of experimental work in various practicals. The individual compulsory elective modules in the BA/MA and the MA are determined by the students themselves. In addition to the traditional fields of biology and biotechnology, students can also specialise in, for example, neurobiology, plant, animal and microbial cell biology, bioprocess engineering and modern genetics methods. Especially important is the integration of assistant professors from non-university institutions (e.g. HZI, RKI, TI, JKI) in teaching.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

The Biosciences are extremely practically oriented. Far more than 50% of teaching consists of experimental work in various practicals. The individual modules in the MA compulsory elective and specialisation areas are compiled by the students themselves depending on the subjects of interest. In addition to the traditional fields of biology and biotechnology, is also possible to specialise in infectious biology, bioprocess engineering, cell biology and molecular biology. Especially important is the integration of assistant professors from non-university institutions (e.g. HZI, RKI, TI, JKI) in teaching.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The Department of Biosciences encourages a vigorous exchange with universities & research institutions abroad. Most students complete work placements lasting several weeks or semesters abroad in European countries, the Benelux countries, England, the USA, Canada, South America, Australia, Mexico or New Zealand. Korea and Japan are also popular. Bachelor's or Master's theses are also written in these countries with funding and supervision from Braunschweig lecturers. Essential language skills can be acquired inexpensively in the extremely well-equipped Language Centre.

Exchange universities for stay abroads

University of Gothenburg, Göteborg, Schweden; Chalmers tekniska högskola, Göteborg, Schweden; Tampere University, Tampere, Finnland; University of Glasgow, Glasgow, UK; University of Waterloo, Kanada; University of Wyoming, USA

Special features regarding the equipment

Students have access to state-of-the-art technical equipment and large-scale devices both in the practical and final theses phases (e.g. high-throughput sequencers, fluorescence microscopes, mass spectrometers with coupled gas chromatographs, high-performance mainframes). Laboratory equipment used by students during practicals can be financed from study quality funds (students have a say in the study commission).

Special features regarding research activities

Life and biosciences in Braunschweig are characterised by numerous close collaborations in research and teaching with the non-university institutions of the region. The Braunschweig region is the leading research region in Europe, and the Braunschweig University of Technology plays a key role. A large proportion of our students complete internships and/or theses with our non-university partners. Since 2016, the BRICS has been a joint research centre of the BS University of Technology, the HZI and the Leibniz Institute DSMZ directly on the campus.

Other special features

The Department of Biosciences cultivates a particularly cooperative and close relationship between students and teaching staff. Students are viewed as equal partners and, in most cases, known by name throughout the entire degree programme (e.g. long-term student project). The teachers maintain an open-door policy. Deans and coordinators have direct and continuous contact with the department and student representatives. Potential problems are therefore identified and eliminated at an early stage. Students like to identify with their university.
