Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Outstanding practical training. Learn methodological skills with state-of-the-art technology. Wide range of excursions in Germany and abroad, wide variety of topics and interdisciplinary elective offerings, including for additional qualifications. Close supervision during practical courses, close and direct exchange with lecturers. First-semester tutorials, buddy programme for international students. Exchange programmes, Mainly in-person teaching, supplemented with digital formats (online learning platforms, blended learning, e-books). Possible participation in international competitions.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Outstanding practical training with state-of-the-art technology; for the teaching qualification, including in the student laboratory and in the botanical garden. Large selection for in-depth study of current research topics, support of individual ideas, excursions, exchange programmes, opportunity to attend conferences, large interdisciplinary offering. Close supervision during practical courses, close exchange with teachers. Theses in cooperation with other faculties as well as national and international research institutions. Master's students organise information conferences.

RUB is affiliated with nine universities in the European University of Cities in Post-Industrial Transition (UNIC) (Erasmus+). Student exchange through ERASMUS, LabExchange, etc. International networking of researchers, enables numerous research visits and work placements abroad. Internationalisation area in the Master's degree programme. Information sessions, individual guidance and financial support for stays abroad, many language courses in the foreign language centre, English-language courses, language café, International Student Service, tandems.

Special features regarding the equipment

Students learn the latest methods and have access to state-of-the-art devices, technologies and databases, e-journals, e-books, the bioinformatics room and study rooms. Focus in the field of imaging with access to numerous special microscopes, and in mass spectrometry and metal analysis using high-resolution devices. Access to high-performance computers and measuring devices on campus and at major international research institutions. This equipment is also used to work on specialisation practicals and final theses. Software is available free of charge.

Special features regarding research activities

Alzheimer's, antibiotics, microbial substrate conversion, neurobiology, ataxia, biotechnology, biochemical networks in plants, biological hydrogen production, biodiversity, phenotypic plasticity, heavy metal resistance in plants, optogenetics, bioluminescence, structural biology, and bioinformatics. Collaborations with, among others, Medicine, Psychology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Leibniz Institute for Environmental Medical Research, Universities of Duisburg-Essen and Dortmund, Max Planck Institutes in Dortmund and Mülheim and numerous other national/international research institutions/companies.

Other special features

The Diversity Portal bundles all information on the topic of diversity, e.g. Diversity Day and the Anti-Discrimination Office. Subjects include inclusion, equality, family friendliness approach, as well as cultural, international and religious diversity and diversity in research and teaching. Faculty representatives are also available to advise. The Central Sustainability Office coordinates all activities, e.g. sustainability week, mission statement on sustainable RUB 2030, the sustainability certificate that students can acquire during their studies, as well as numerous opportunities for participation.
