Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Biology in Aachen is characterised by applied and basic research, which has a tradition of interdisciplinary work. There are close teaching and research partnerships with the Universitätsklinikum Aachen, the Helmholtz Centres in Jülich and Leipzig, the Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biotechnology and Applied Ecology (IME), the Leibniz Institute DWI and the RWTH Departments of Engineering and Geosciences. Digitally optimised classroom teaching features state-of-the-art teaching and learning methods.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Biology in Aachen is characterised by applied and basic research, which has a tradition of interdisciplinary work. There are close teaching and research partnerships with the Universitätsklinikum Aachen, the Helmholtz Centres in Jülich and Leipzig, the Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biotechnology and Applied Ecology (IME), the Leibniz Institute DWI and the RWTH Departments of Engineering and Geosciences. Digitally optimised classroom teaching features state-of-the-art teaching and learning methods. Classes are taught in an interactive manner and on the basis of feedback.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The Department of Biology with its degree programmes has very good international ties, e.g. IDEA League and links to other leading technical universities in Europe. In Biotechnology and environmental research, there are numerous cooperation agreements with renowned universities in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia. Undergraduates can participate in research projects at TOP universities through the UROP programme.

Special features regarding research activities

Biology and biotechnology research in Aachen focuses on two key areas: bioeconomy and neurobiology & biomedical life science. This includes the following four institutes, which have good international and interdisciplinary networks: Plant Biology; Biotechnology; Ecology & Computational Life Science; Neurobiology & Medical Life Science. Among other things, we have close contacts with the University Hospital Aachen, Fraunhofer IME, DWI Leibniz Institute for Interactive Materials and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research in Leipzig.

Other special features

Strong cross-linking within the RWTH Aachen University. This means that after the completing undergraduate studies, the focus of the student's academic future benefits from the entire diversity of excellent university research.
