Special features regarding teaching

Medical skills are achieved by teaching professional, scientific and social or personal skills. Even if the curriculum continues to be focused on the disciplines, the main courses are taught in an interdisciplinary and problem- or case-related manner. "Professional skills" are supported by two interconnected teaching/learning spirals: clinical thinking and clinical skills. Teaching is developed on an ongoing basis by the Chair of Medical Education, Medical Teaching Development and Educational Research.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Two pillars of the international orientation: Partnerships with institutions with excellence in teaching (exchange programmes with renowned universities) and active support of social and humanitarian commitment (humanitarian placements with NGOs); Specific preparatory courses: "Case Discussion Round": Presentation and processing of patient cases following Anglo-American patterns; in a special series of courses, experts report on their work in developing countries.; In addition: International summer schools, further exchange programmes (ERASMUS, etc.).

Exchange universities for stay abroads

Weill Cornell Medical College, NY, USA; Osaka University, Japan; Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITEMS), Mexiko; Université Sorbonne, Frankreich; Univerzita Karlova, Tschechien; Universidad Miguel Hernandez de Elche, Spanien; Università degli Studi di Firenze, Italien; Hewbrew University (BmN), Israel

Special features regarding research activities

Extensive coordination of/ participation in high-level funded joint research projects (Collaborative Research Centres, Transregional Collaborative Research Centres, Cluster of Excellence, DFG Research Groups, including BMBF, Spitzencluster M4; EU, etc.) Munich as the only nationwide location of all six German centres for health research (DZD, DZNE, DZHK, DZIF, DKTK, DZL); Extensive inter-faculty cooperation at the Munich University of Technology (TUM), in particular with the School of Life Sciences, the department of Engineering and the School of Education, as a reflection of the TUM portfolio.

Other special features

With the establishment of the Chair of Medical Didactics, Medical Teaching Development and Educational Research, various disciplines are working on further developing the range of courses and new learning & teaching methods. At the TUM Medical Education Centre, this academic area (Research & Development) is closely and bi-directionally linked to the operational area (TUM Degree Programme Management & Medical Training Centre).
