The research profile of Universitätsmedizin Göttingen (UMG; University Medicine Göttingen) is heavily characterised by the focal areas of the neurosciences and cardiovascular research. The Neuroscience Cluster of Excellence CNMPB is characterised by particularly intensive cooperation between university and non-university institutions of the Göttingen Campus. Both focal areas are funded by the BMBF (German Federal Ministry of Education and Research) as the locations of German health research centres (DZNE, DZHK), and are each represented by a DFG-funded Collaborative Research Centre (CRC 889, CRC SFB 1002).

In research and teaching, the clinical-scientific institutions of the University of Medicine are closely connected with the Natural Sciences faculties of the University (in particular Biology and Psychology, Physics, Chemistry) as well as the non-university research institutions on the Göttingen Campus. The Faculty of Medicine participates in numerous programmes of the Graduate School of Natural Sciences at the GAUSS (Georg-August-Universität School of Science).
