Special features regarding teaching

In line with our teaching mission, we attach great importance to lively interaction between students and lecturers. This serves as the basis for the further development of our model course. The university and university hospital are combined on one campus in Düsseldorf. As a result, our students do not need to travel long distances. At the centre is the O.A.S.E. The learning and communication centre includes workstations, e-learning and counselling rooms as well as the medical library. The P.A.L.M.E. teaching and learning centre, which supports the digitalisation of studies and examinations, will open in 2024.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Our faculty is founded on strong international networking in research and teaching. Scientists are involved in EU-wide research programmes. Students benefit from our 35 Erasmus partnerships and collaborations with universities overseas (Japan, USA). The exchange is coordinated by the Dean's Office of the Medicine department. The Dean's Office also offers advice to students who are not participating in a supporting programme. In order to provide international students with special support, the faculty has built up an extensive range of student-accompanied international specialist tutorials.

Special features regarding the equipment

High-end research technologies and services are available in the core facilities. This specialised equipment infrastructure is available to all researchers and enables highly technical analytical procedures in electron microscopy, magnetic resonance imaging, bioinformatics, high-throughput drug screening, advanced light microscopy and flow cytometry. Based on the central hospital information system (HIS), there are numerous systems (e.g. biobanks, HPC cluster medicine, data integration centre) that make (treatment) data usable for medical research and teaching.

Special features regarding research activities

The scientific profile of the faculty is characterised by the close integration of fundamental, translational and clinical research. Priority research areas are cardiovascular research, diabetology and metabolism research, research on immunity, infection and inflammation as well as in the areas of health and society, oncology and translational neuroscience. These research fields have nationally and internationally visible research networks. Research Training Groups and Clinician Scientist Programmes support young academics.

Other special features

At the Faculty of Medicine of the HHU, the digitalisation of teaching plays an important role. There is a broad spectrum of implemented e-learning scenarios, for example, brain operations are regularly transmitted live from the operating room to a seminar room using a video and audio live streaming system. Augmented reality glasses allow students to learn about anatomical content in a special way. Thanks to the approximately 550 PC workstations in the innovative and interdisciplinary teaching and learning centre P.A.L.M.E., digital examination formats will open up valuable new didactic opportunities in the future.
