Special features regarding teaching

Interdisciplinary structure of the model degree programme with four study phases; Learning spiral; Organ-centred subjects; Practical relevance from the first semester.; Connection between pre-clinical and clinical; From the third semester: interdisciplinary system blocks with clinical diagnosis courses/ patient contact; From seventh semester: block practicals in all clinical disciplines. Optional free semester 8/9 Semester for doctoral dissertation; Study abroad or clinical internship. Qualification profiles: Thematically related compulsory elective courses in which students gain a defined additional qualification

Special features regarding the international orientation

Aachen is the model degree programme with more than 40 foreign partner universities, e.g. within the framework of ERASMUS+. Some study phases, such as the nursing work placement, hospital internship, practical year and other services are completed at partner universities and then recognised. Students receive specific guidance on this.; In addition, the Bundesvertretung der Medizinstudierenden in Deutschland (BVMD) offers strong support for stays abroad worldwide during the course of studies. Compulsory elective area: SEMERA – new specialisation in English for the duration of one semester, with a focus on research.

Exchange universities for stay abroads

Université Catholique de Lille, Frankreich; Università degli Studi di Padova, Italien; Gachon University of Medicine and Science, Südkorea; Medizinische Universität Graz, Österreich; University of British Columbia, Kanada; Seoul National University, Südkorea; National University of Singapore, Singapur; University of California, USA

Special features regarding the equipment

The Faculty of Medicine is a UCAN member. The IMS examination system is used to carry out digitally supported in-person examinations. Due to the Model Degree Programme and, therefore. the lack of connection to the LPA up to M2, the development of faculty examination databases was necessary. In the first year of study, lectures are held in-person and live-streamed via a specially developed platform (VEIRA), then they are made available as a recording afterwards.

Special features regarding research activities

Research focuses: Organ crosstalk: interaction of organs and their self-regulation in the context of clinically relevant issues; phase transition in disease: investigation of disease pathways and the emergence of new stable states in the sense of attractors of complex systems; Translational Neuroscience: investigation of emergent phenomena such as neuronal plasticity using computational neurosciences, emotion and cognition as well as sensor technology and motor skills, regulation of psychotic and neurodegenerative disorders; medical technology & digital life sciences as a platform topic.

Other special features

Medical Library; university-wide WiFi; online examinations, registration and evaluation; POL; Small groups; simulation patients; didactics training; OSPE; practical year repetition courses; qualification profiles; innovat. teaching projects; virtual microscopy, e-media skill lab, VEIRA video platform.
