Special features regarding teaching

In the Bachelor's programme, in addition to the essential basic knowledge, we also teach our students the associated methodological and problem-solving skills. The Bachelor's programme is continuously enriched by project assignments based on the content of lectures. This project-based learning provides an insight into the future world of work and trains our students’ ability to work in a team and their goal orientation. We support our students in spending time abroad.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The ET&IT institute offered the successful international degree course "Digital Communications" for many years. For the winter semester 2019/20, it was replaced by the new international Master's degree programme in "Electrical Engineering and Information Technology". Students have the option - in addition to the specialisation "Digital Communications" - to choose other specialisations. The large number of English-language Master modules also offers Erasmus students the best prerequisites for spending a semester at the University of Kiel.

Special features regarding the equipment

The faculty is also home to the Kiel nano lab, in which chairs from the faculty conduct research. There have been a number of new appointments in recent semesters and as part of this a large proportion of the institute's equipment has been replaced. A new research building for the Centre for Networked Sensor Systems and a new lecture hall building including library areas are currently being built on the Ostufer campus of the faculty. Students have access to important online resources (subject-specific journals and e-books) and a specialised library. They receive their own virtual storage space.

Special features regarding research activities

The Institute of Electrical and Information Technology is involved in the research fields of renewable energies, electrical energy networks and artificial intelligence (AI), which are particularly important for a livable future. The Collaborative Research Centres "Magnetoelectric Sensors" and "Neuroelectronics" are the cornerstones of our interdisciplinary research. The institute is involved in the research focus areas "Kiel Marine Science", "Kiel Life Science" and "Kiel Nano, Surface and Interface Science" as well as the Excellence Cluster "Future Ocean" of the University of Kiel.

Support for founders

People interested in starting a company and business founders are given advice and support by the Centre for Entrepreneurship of the University of Kiel. Apart from this, the Centre of Entrepreneurship provides support, for example, in the choice of appropriate funding options for personal projects and in applications for funding. The chairs of the institute also actively support spin-offs and successful spin-offs have already taken place.

Other special features

Before the start of the semester, the institute and the departmental student body offer the new students an extensive programme with workshops and discussion rounds. In addition to information on the degree programme and organisation, the focus is on finding suitable learning groups, dealing with setbacks and reflecting on the study decision. The initial study project then offers the option of working independently in a group. For school pupils and students, we regularly hold practical lab events that focus on independent work.
