Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

We recognise the importance of strong support for students during the initial phase study by ensuring small group sizes and the use of other students (peers) in teaching, e.g. in classroom exercises, learning cafés and during exam preparation weekend. Thanks to the very good support they receive, students are closely supervised when writing bachelor's and seminar theses, and they receive a lot of valuable feedback.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Thanks to our consistent focus as an international degree programme, our students' English-language skills improve almost as a by-product. In addition, by working with international students and teachers, they are ideally prepared to work in an international environment. The support provided during the master's degree programme is especially good and is also reflected in the very good support students receive when writing their master's thesis. Many theses at the institute lead directly to academic publication.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Our students are taught by an international teaching staff. With the exception of special lectures, the Bachelor's degree course is taught exclusively in German; in the Master's degree course, all lectures are in English. The English-language courses also make (incoming and outgoing) mobility easy for our students.

Special features regarding the equipment

Modern computer pools in the competence and service centre (Windows, Linux). More computer workstations and access to HPC servers for some working groups. WiFi in all university buildings and central public spaces in Jena. All teaching rooms are equipped with video projectors, and often also technology for streaming/recording lectures.

Special features regarding research activities

In the faculty research focus areas include Analysis, Stochastics and Algebra/Geometry. The faculty is involved in various DFG priority programmes (algebra, geometry, and theoretical numerics). An ERC grant discretisation and adaptive approximation of fully nonlinear equations (2021–2026) was also obtained in the field of numerics.

Other special features

The University of Jena takes its social responsibility on current topics such as sustainability and diversity seriously. The university's Green Office supports all processes with a view to sustainability. The Diversity Office provides central contact persons for anti-discrimination counselling. Furthermore, the university curates its own course catalogue with events related to gender, diversity and sustainability.
