Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Since the winter semester 2021/22, the main courses can be studied entirely in English as part of the bachelor's degree in computer science. The course content is essentially the same as that of the German-language bachelor's degree programme. The Saarbrücken Faculty of Computer Science offers an inspiring environment for students and doctoral candidates from all over the world. The wide range of research topics – from computer graphics to artificial intelligence to software technology – is also reflected in the teaching. The same applies to the close links between the university and research institutes.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

The Department of Computer Science is the most international department at Saarland University. More than 50% of master's degree students are foreign. A above-average number of employees and post-doc students come from abroad as well. English is the language of instruction for the master's degree programmes. The many academic directors and heads of computer science institutes on campus (honorary professors) offer courses, which greatly expands the breadth of education.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The Saarbrücken Computer Science department has the highest degree of internationalisation of the entire Saarland University. In the Master's area, over 50% of students come from abroad. In the employee and postdoc area, there are also many people from abroad. The lectures in the Master's degree courses are in English.; Overall: Internat Lecturer exchange, offers from the Welcome Centre/International Office for international first-year students and all students; university network "University of the Greater Region" and the "Transform4Europe" alliance to increase student mobility.

Exchange universities for stay abroads

University of Edinburgh, UK; Trinity College Dublin, Irland; Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Spanien; University of Bergen, Norwegen; Université Paris Diderot, Frankreich; Università di Bologna, Italien; Bilkent University, Middle East Technical University, Türkei; Sofiiski Universitet 'Sveti Kliment Ohridski', Bulgarien; Tallinna Tehnikaülikool, Estland; University of Warsaw, Polen

Special features regarding the equipment

WiFi access in all Computer Science buildings. In addition, there are 200 computer workstations available (accessible around the clock due to an RFID-based access control system). At the chairs, there are around a further 100 workstations which can mainly be used by advanced students. The Max Planck Institutes and the DFKI (German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence) also provide resources for students. Remote connections available to all students so they can access their familiar working environment from anywhere in the world.

Special features regarding research activities

The site is the only one in Germany that was able to set up a computer science-centred cluster of excellence and a computer science postgraduate school at the same time. The strength of the research has led to the fact that, in addition to a great deal of national third-party funding, great successes have also been achieved at the European level. Twenty ERC grantees conduct research at the site. Many research projects are interdisciplinary, which at the same time underlines the fact that Computer Science has bridges to almost all other faculties at Saarland University.

Other special features

About 12 years ago, the specialist libraries of Computer Science, Mathematics and the Max Planck Institute of Computer Science and Software Systems were integrated, as well as the DFKI, into one of the largest Computer Science specialist libraries in Germany. Researchers and students of all Computer Science institutes therefore have full access to the complete collection. The merger enabled the procurement of duplicates and the expansion of the stock. Opportunities from the Equal Opportunity and Diversity Management Unit: Anti-discrimination body and guidelines; New sustainability department
