Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Pilot faculty of the RPTU within the scope of the "Excellence in Teaching" competition held by the Stifterverband, a joint initiative of German companies and foundations.; long tradition of ensuring quality in academic studies and teaching, state teaching award in 2016 and 2020 presented to the faculty's to lecturers; Distance learning programme for early commencement of physics studies; The only one in the country: B.Sc. and M.Sc. Technophysics = a true 50-50 combination of physics and mechanical engineering; Attractive, closely supported internships; Close integration of teaching and didactic research with the establishment and evaluation of new teaching-learning formats; Open-door policy on the part of teachers for students.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The Advanced Quantum Physics Master's degree programme is entirely in English. Teaching courses in English is intended to prepare interested German students for a stay abroad or for professional employment, but also caters to international students, ; who are essential for the culture of research and academics on the University of Kaiserslautern-Landau (RPTU) campus. Structured programmes for a semester abroad are also available for students. The career-integrated English Master's degree programme QuanTUK is being introduced. Students are involved in international research cooperations of the work groups, the proportion of students of a class who take advantage of this option for exchange is about 33 percent.

Special features regarding the equipment

Outstanding equipment thanks to very high levels of third-party funding and participation in 4 collaborative research centres (CRCs); Examples of large-scale equipment in the department are focused ion beam microscopy/lithography (FIB), normal incidence photoemission electron microscope (NI-PEEM), Mott detector spin- and angle-resolved UPS system, and magnetron sputter coater. Affiliated with the Faculty of Physics are the Institute for Surface and Layer Analysis (IFOS) and the Nano Structuring Centre (NSC) as a technology centre.

Special features regarding research activities

Participation in 4 CRCs enables very good equipment and early integration into forward-looking research projects in modern physics. This includes, for example, concepts for new spin-based computing, basic research on quantum optics and ultracold quantum systems, as well as modern laser and surface physics in the field of medicine. A new research building Laboratory for Advanced Spin Engineering has opened. Close cooperations exist with the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence, the Fraunhofer ITWM, the Photonics Centre and the IFOS.

Other special features

Students can contribute to shaping developments in the Department of Physics beyond their studies.; Student representatives are not only represented in decision-making processes with regard to teaching (e.g. new appointments, establishment of new courses of study), but are also listened to as partners.; Professors' doors are open for the needs and interests of the students.
