Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Computer science students can choose from a wide range of specialisations; A large number of electives, equivalent to 32 credit points, allows students to design their studies individually, and this flexibility has a positive impact on their ability to study; Thanks to the large number of IT companies in the region, students receive both a sound academic foundation and practical training; All advanced lectures are offered in English, which makes the department attractive for international students.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Computer science students can choose from a wide range of specialisations; A large number of electives, equivalent to 34 credit points, allows students to design their studies individually, and this flexibility has a positive impact on their ability to study; A research module and several affiliated research institutes allow students to engage in research at an early stage; The course of studies is offered entirely in English, which makes the faculty attractive for international students.

Special features regarding the international orientation

More than half of the students in the Master's degree programmes and doctoral candidates already come from abroad. Diverse international research collaborations also facilitate opportunities for studying abroad. The affiliated institute Fraunhofer IESE maintains a subsidiary institute in Maryland which is often used for stays abroad.

Special features regarding the equipment

Extensive computer and software equipment is available to the students on three levels. The regional university computer centre (RHRZ) provides several computer rooms, a high-performance computer and a central printing service. The SCI (Computer Science Service Centre) provides the department's own IT provision with a total of 100 terminal workstations in four rooms. All work groups in the department provide sufficient student workplaces to carry out practical placements and final theses.

Special features regarding research activities

The Computer Science department is at the core of one of the largest IT (research) centres in Germany. The profile is characterised by the engineering design of information systems. General research aims are the improvement of system reliability, adaptability as well as equipping these systems with more artificial intelligence. The central application areas of the site are Systems Engineering, Intelligent and Distributed Information Systems, as well as Scientific Computing.

Other special features

Advancing sustainability within the university and through transfer to society is a continual process to which the RPTU takes an institution-wide approach. In doing so, we anchor the ecological, economic and social dimension of the topic in the university and involve all university members. The university is also committed to the 2030 Agenda and the Rhineland-Palatinate Climate Protection Act. A diversity network at RPTU has been dealing with diversity issues since 2017. A Sustainability Certificate was introduced in 2023.
