Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The University of Münster has a long tradition of mathematics teaching and research. Mathematics students benefit from a broad and intensive mathematical education provided by some 44 mathematics professors. A dedicated learning centre offers bachelor's degree students additional support outside of regular classes. Our English-language master's degree programme offers very flexible options, with 11 different specialisations and various interdisciplinary courses, and introduces students to ongoing research on an individual basis.

The University of Münster has a long tradition of mathematics teaching and research. Mathematics students benefit from a broad and intensive mathematical education provided by some 44 mathematics professors. Our English-language master's degree programme offers very flexible options, with 11 different specialisations (in both theoretical and applied areas) and various interdisciplinary courses, and introduces students to ongoing research on an individual basis. It can be studied with or without a minor.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Since the winter semester 2020/21, the department has been offering the MSc in Mathematics, an English-taught Master's degree programme. To promote international student mobility, there are a number of scholarship programmes for this degree course: full scholarships for international Master's students as well as short-term scholarships (incoming for 2–6 months, outgoing for 1–6 months).

Special features regarding research activities

The Cluster of Excellence Mathematics Münster with its three focal points – arithmetic and groups, spaces and operators, models and approximations – and the Collaborative Research Centre Deformation and Rigidity are places of excellence in the fields of Theoretical and Applied Mathematics. An intensive exchange between the specialised disciplines enables innovative research approaches. Mathematicians from Münster have already been awarded four Leibniz prizes, two Alexander von Humboldt professorships, six ERC grants, a Staudt prize and a Max Planck Research Prize.

Other special features

The University of Münster understands sustainability as an essential element of teaching and as a core dimension of research-based learning. Sustainability is already anchored as a separate area of competence in the general studies courses, which can be taken by all students. The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science also addresses sustainability in teaching. In the field of computational science, for example, through the topic of 'Modelling and Simulation in Climate Research'.
