Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

on-campus teaching: all computer science courses are held within a radius of 100 metres. Students learn from students: extensive use of student tutors at the bachelor's level. In many cases, small groups/teamwork in exercises, project groups and practicals.

Special features regarding the equipment

Excellent computer equipment for students and staff; WiFi in all buildings/central rooms (internal/VPN, eduroam); Several student computer pools with technical support; other special labs in the individual Computer Science departments (e.g. Computer Graphics, Robotics/Autonomous Intelligent Systems, IT Security, Malware Analysis, Laser & Light lab). The Rhein-Ruhr Machine Learning Competence Centre (ML2R) and the PhenoRob Cluster of Excellence provide excellent, subject-specific technical equipment for teaching and research.

Special features regarding research activities

Strongly practice-oriented; Close cooperation with the Fraunhofer IAIS and Fraunhofer FKIE (Institute directors are professors of Computer Science; additional joint professorships); also close cooperation with the Bonn-Aachen International Centre for Information Technology; the departments of Data Science, IT Security and Privacy and Robotics and Visual Computing shape practical Computer Science, which is complemented by strong theory groups; Close cooperation with the internationally outstanding Mathematics department in Bonn (Cluster of Excellence, Hausdorff Centre, Research Institutes for Discrete Mathematics).

Other special features

The first year of the Bachelor's degree course is supported by study support offered by student tutors four days per week. In this way, students receive help if they have any questions regarding the compulsory lectures. Intensive examination preparatory courses are offered leading up to the examination dates. The institute organises regular departmental and interdisciplinary equality events. Some of these are aimed at all students, others target under-represented groups for selected subject areas. The measures are supported by the Equal Opportunities Office.
