Computer science research and teaching at RWTH Aachen have a sound theoretical basis and a focus on practical applications. Special features regarding the equipment

The IT centre generally provides services in the areas of communication (e.g. WiFi, e-mail), security and digital teaching (Moodle, RWTHonline, RWTHApp, O365). It also offers students the use of the university's HPC cluster, various IT courses and central counselling on all offerings of the IT centre (also via chat and social media). In addition, the Department of Computer Science operates an open Fab(rication) Lab(oratory) under the management of the Media Computing Group, the virtual reality installation aixCAVE and the student lab "InfoSphere".

Special features regarding research activities

Almost 40 research groups carry out a broad spectrum of research activities which are both international and interdisciplinary, in theoretical and in practical and technical computer science. There are close cooperations, e.g. with Fraunhofer FIT and the Jülich Research Centre. Computer Science is involved in the "Internet of Production" cluster of excellence and has also received ten ERC grants. In addition to a Leibniz Prize and three Alexander von Humboldt Professorships, it boasts numerous achievements, such as Google Faculty Research Awards.

Other special features

The Bachelor's degree in Computer Science offers a very comprehensive mentoring programme to facilitate the initial study phase. The close contact with the Department of Computer Science enables a good exchange to address the interests of the student body. REGINA e.V. (ICT network in the region of Aachen) provides a direct link to the local industry. Through numerous contacts within the RWTH, the Computer Science department conducts highly interdisciplinary activities and research.
