Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

For the Physics degree, the Universität Potsdam offers a framework which can be individually designed with small groups, personal contact to the teaching staff and early involvement in research groups. In the fields of Astrophysics and Climate Physics, colleagues from institutes for Astrophysics, Climate Change Research and for Polar and Marine Research are highly involved in teaching on both the Bachelor's as well as Master's levels. The new buildings on the Natural Sciences Campus Golm provide the best conditions for successful academic studies.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

The Master's degree course in Physics is research-oriented. The aim is for students in a specialist field to acquire scientific independence with which they can successfully work on problems in basic or applied research. Through close cooperation between the Institute of Physics and Astronomy and renowned non-university research institutions, the Master's degree programme in Physics offers students practical training, in which they can choose to focus on application or the basic principles, as well as excellent opportunities for specialisation.

Special features regarding the international orientation

If Master's students from abroad who do not understand German are attending lectures, exercises or seminars, they will be taught in English, if this is acceptable to the German-speaking participants. Students are involved in international research cooperations of the work groups, the proportion of students of a class who take advantage of this option for exchange is about 20 percent.

Special features regarding the equipment

The Institute of Physics is a generously designed new building with bright lecture theatres and large work space for students. Seminar rooms, free seating areas, two computer clusters and student organisation rooms are available to students from the 1.Semester The institute has state-of-the-art equipment for investigating the dynamic properties of physical systems on all relevant time and length scales, including several optical laser experiments with femtosecond time resolution, various scanning probe and light microscopes, as well as cell culture and microstructure laboratories.

Special features regarding research activities

The new buildings on the Natural Science Campus Golm provide the best conditions for successful academic studies and outstanding research. Potsdam also houses non-university research institutes of a high international reputation. This includes the Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam, the Max Planck Institute of Gravitational Physics and Colloids and Interfaces, the Institute for Climate Impact Research, Institute for Polar and Marine Research and the Institute for Applied Polymer Research. The university cooperates with these institutes in research and teaching.
