Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

At the Institute of Physics, there are approx. 25 professors working in the fields of Experimental Physics, Theoretical Physics, Chemical Physics, Solid State Chemistry, Materials Science , Technical Biology and Didactics of Physics. The cooperation of colleagues with varying backgrounds promotes inter-disciplinary teaching. Students can choose from a broad range of special lectures and carry out final theses specialising in either Physics or Materials Sciences. In addition to the basic topics, there are also numerous application-related topics available for selection.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Students in the physics master's degree programme can choose a variety of elective options that enables them to select a specialisation based on their own interests. In addition to the options in the field of physics, students can also choose a minor in chemistry, materials science, mathematics, computer science, business administration or economics.

Special features regarding the equipment

The Department of Physics is located in two modern research facilities as well as a lecture theatre building on the Campus of the Universität Augsburg. This guarantees short distances between lectures, practicals and research in the lab. The department is very well equipped in terms of the synthesis, characterisation and the further development of new materials. It provides numerous large-scale equipment units for modern methods of solid-state spectroscopy, material synthesis and material analysis as well as the institute's own helium liquefier for low-temperature experiments.

Special features regarding research activities

The research focus at the institute is the field of condensed matter, with the department being one of the largest in Germany. In particular there is a centre for electronic correlations and magnetism, which is leading in the coordination of national joint projects on this topic. Further key areas lie in nanotechnology, materials research, plasma physics, statistical physics, chemical physics, and technical biology.

Other special features

The transfer point of the institute, the Anwenderzentrum Material- und Umweltforschung (Application Centre for Material and Environmental Research), maintains close contacts with industry and assists in the organisation of work placements. Thanks to this networking, graduates easily find positions in companies in the region. The institute is connected through two working groups to the Max Planck Institute of Plasma Physics in Garching and the German Aerospace Centre in Oberpfaffenhofen. It also has close links to the Institute for Materials Resource Management.
