Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The basic course of studies at Tübingen emphasises a sound theoretical education while at the same time providing numerous practical elements. International elements such as lectures conducted in English and numerous, flexible exchange opportunities are available earl on. Current research topics, especially in the specialisation areas artificial intelligence, bioinformatics and medical informatics, provide students with an opportunity to deepen their knowledge and learn more about research during their bachelor's degree. Numerous events organised by practitioners from industry ensure professional relevance.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

The Tübingen master's degree programmes place a strong focus on research. As a national competence centre for artificial intelligence, Cyber Valley offers its students opportunities for research on an international level and contacts to leading AI companies. At the same time, emphasis is placed on social, political, philosophical and legal aspects, as befits a university with a more-than 500-year history.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The international Master's degree in Machine Learning is taught completely in English, and over 50% of it is taken by non-German students. The courses in Bioinformatics and Medical Informatics can also be studied in English. Numerous exchange programs with outstanding and long-established European universities, but also several US, Asian and African universities offer the opportunity for global experiences during your Bachelor's degree. With a total of about 14% foreign students, Tübingen itself is one of the most international cities in Germany.

Special features regarding the equipment

Locally operated cloud infrastructure for machine learning and bioinformatics, with over 1000 GPUs and dedicated hardware for student learning. Specialized laboratories for robotics, human body capture, eye-tracking and motion-tracking laboratory, robots, quadrocopter, digital 3D photo studio, LightStage, driving simulator, hardware laboratory, brain-computer interface, psychophysics laboratory, internet laboratory, augmented reality.

Special features regarding research activities

With the Cyber Valley Campus, three MPIs, an AI cluster of excellence, the first institute of the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems, and a national competence centre for AI research of the BMBF, Tübingen is a leading location for artificial intelligence and machine learning in Europe. But medical and bioinformatics and cognitive sciences are also part of the local expertise. Close ties to the natural and life sciences and even law provide for an unusually interdisciplinary research environment.

Other special features

As a computer science department at one of the great old universities in Germany, computer science in Tübingen traditionally attaches great importance to social relevance. A philosophy and ethics laboratory at the AI Excellence Cluster, a research institute for AI law, an AI makerspace in the city centre, or an AI rhetoric centre are symbolic of this claim, which is also reflected in the student body.
