Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Subject-specific additional offerings in the first year of study enable students to design their studies individually and support them at the start (including a three-week preparatory course, a mathematics workshop and a special course on mathematical work). The wide-ranging opportunities for practice in small groups throughout the entire period of study creates a supportive learning atmosphere. Close contact with and good accessibility to lecturers ensures students receive individual support and an early introduction to current research topics. Offered areas of specialisation include analysis and numerics, geometry and algebra, statistics and stochastics. Broad range of minors.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Courses in small groups and with close contact to professors provides students with individual support. Introduction to current research topics through research-related courses, advanced seminars and colloquia. Opportunity to specialise in algebra, analysis, differential geometry, numerical mathematics and optimisation, partial differential equations, (real) algebraic geometry, statistics, stochastics and stochastic analysis. Option to focus entirely on mathematics or other subjects as well thanks to a wide range of minor subjects.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Double degree programme with Jiao Tong University Shanghai; Erasmus; Erasmus+; Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) "Secure Communication in the Digital Age: Exploring the Synergy between Cryptography, Algebra, and Industrial Mathematics" in 2023

Exchange universities for stay abroads

UNIVERSITETET I TROMSOE - NORGES ARKTISKE UNIVERSITET; University of Technology Sydney (UTS); Uppsala University; Université de Paris Cité.

Special features regarding the equipment

Computer and server network set up in accordance with current standards; Special student computer workstations in the sub-focus area of numerics, set up according to the latest standards in teaching (exercises, seminars, final theses); Large student computer pool operated together with the Physics department; In the sub-focus area of Statistics, a wide selection of state-of-the-art software packages with regard to their use in teaching; Access to the university's Scientific Compute Cluster (SCCKN); Access to bwHPC (High Performance Computing, Data Intensive Computing and Large Scale Data Management).

Special features regarding research activities

Close links between analysis, numerics and stochastics through a common focus on partial differential equations and time-dependent phenomena; International central position for real algebraic geometry; Various application-oriented research projects in the field of numerical optimisation; Special minor in algorithmic methods in algebra; Recognised, high level of research; Broad networking inside and outside of the university, and close research contacts in Germany and abroad; Close relations with the university's Zukunftskolleg (institution for the promotion of young academics); Statistics Centre.

Other special features

Clearly structured department (12 professorships, 4 junior professorships) in a campus university (approx. 11,000 students), which has been counted among only 6 universities as a University of Excellence since 2007; High standard of research and teaching; The Mathematics department responds to the known high demands by organising various events, especially in the initial study phase.; Good accessibility to the lecturers; High value placed on specialist advice on mathematics; Konstanz Women in Mathematics (KWIM) programme for promoting women in mathematics.
