Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Computer Science at KIT offers the most diverse spectrum of courses with more than 250 per semester; this ensures that students can deepen and specialise their knowledge following a solid basic education in theoretical, technical and practical Computer Science as well as Mathematics in almost any way depending on their interests and inclinations. Students gain practical and team experience as part of a software internship.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Substantial diversity covering all aspects of computer science (from theory and algorithms to data science, AI and robotics). Students in the master's degree programme in computer science have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of one of currently ten study profiles and to obtain certification for this specialisation (e.g. IT security, artificial intelligence, robotics, etc.).

Special features regarding the international orientation

The KIT department of computer science offers a double master's degree with the elite university INP Grenoble as well as an Erasmus student exchange with numerous locations. The KIT InterACT scholarship programme enables students to carry out their final theses at the highest quality locations worldwide (e.g. USA, China, Tokyo, etc.) and supports them financially and with intensive support on site and through KIT.

Exchange universities for stay abroads

Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA; Standford University, Standford, USA; Waseda University, Tokio, Japan; Université Grenoble Alpes, INP Grenoble, Grenoble, Frankreich; Aalto University, Espoo, Finnland; Technisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Universität Norwegens, Trondheim, Norwegen; Lissabon University, Lissabon, Portugal; Universität Zürich, Zürich, Schweiz; Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Madrid, Spanien; Technische Hochschule Chalmers, Göteborg, Schweden.

Special features regarding the equipment

Campus Wi-Fi; Multimedia lecture halls; Seminar rooms with multimedia technology, which can also be used as group study rooms; 1 large and 4 small computer science computer pool rooms (approx. 100 workspaces) in addition to the data centre pool rooms; Courses are recorded, and the faculty library offers a very pleasant learning environment, group study rooms, local area network (LAN) and power outlets at the reading spaces); 24 hour KIT Central Library; Industrial Robotics Labs, Humanoid Robotic Labs; Heavy and precision mechanics and electronics workshops (circuit board production); Comprehensive access to online publication databases, robot design studio in the new InformatiKOM building

Special features regarding research activities

Approx. 50 professorships and more than 300 academic staff cover the majority of Computer Science, including Algorithms, Software Engineering, Theoretical Informatics and Verification, Telematics/Information and Communication Technology, Pervasive Computing and Sensor Networks, Industrial, Service and Medical Robotics, Humanoid Robotics and Anthropomatics, Cognitive Systems, KI, IT Security and Cryptography, Embedded Systems, Operating Systems, Visualisation and Computer Graphics, Big Data and Data Mining as well as legal aspects of Computer Science through our own law professors in the department.

Other special features

Founded in 1972, the Faculty of Computer Science at the KIT was the first of its kind in Germany and is now one of the largest, with 50 professorships currently occupied. For many years, the faculty has been in the TOP 5 in Germany in the various rankings. It has awarded more than 9,000 Diploma degrees / Master's course degrees, and more than 1,400 doctoral degrees. Over 250 graduates have already gone on to become professors. The freshers are supported by student Tutorials in the first semesters of the mandatory programme. The course offering is extremely diverse and of high quality.
