Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

A wide range of courses on various specialisation opportunities is provided within the faculty and also through the Cluster of Excellence, the IWR and the various graduate schools. Excellent research opportunities are available, especially for master's students. Students also have in-depth interdisciplinary opportunities in different fields.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The Heidelberg Mathematics Department has strong international networks; there are numerous cooperations and joint research projects with institutions around the whole world. The students also benefit greatly from this, as an international exchange is also possible for them through the usual programmes.

Special features regarding the equipment

The MaMpf e-learning platform developed at the department links the teaching content within and between the various courses as a hypermedia system, supporting the students in independent learning. Course and learning materials from previous semesters are permanently available, and can be used as reference materials by the lecturers, and students can browse through them using individual search terms. There is also a modern computing infrastructure with computer clusters that can be used for writing final theses.

Special features regarding research activities

Mathematics in Heidelberg is characterised by a strong connection between theory and practice and between the individual sub-areas. In Pure Mathematics, an inter-disciplinary research focus in Arithmetics and Geometry has been created. Applied Mathematics is characterised by its inter-disciplinary character, several groups are based in the Inter-Disciplinary Centre for Scientific Computing. The STRUCTURES Cluster of Excellence combines interdisciplinary research with the promotion of junior researchers.

Other special features

MaMpf, the Mathematical Media Platform, is an ever-growing project that bundles various e-learning offers, e.g.: Hypervideos: Lecture, sample and review videos organized by content with links to related materials; Hypertexts: Lecture notes, exercise sheets and additional materials organized by content with links to related materials; Quizzes: Compiled from an extensive collection of multiple-choice questions, mathematical exercises and guided proofs supported by a tagging system, cross-linking keywords and mind maps.
