Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

From the beginning, small group supervision in student-led tutorials for lectures. In later semesters, good professor-student ratio. In addition to frequently represented areas, there is also a focus on mathematical logic. Substantial elective options in the BSc and MSc degree programmes. Significant teaching crossover (including logic taught in computer science and philosophy). Own (small) department of didactics for mathematics.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Good professor-student ratio. Specialisation in all areas of focus is possible, including through flexible opportunities for supervised self-study ("reading courses") in the curriculum. Rotating selection of special lectures, in particular by post-docs. Inclusion of professors from mathematics fields by special arrangement.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Erasmus exchange with 17 universities. Freiburg is part of the tri-national EUCOR network of Upper Rhine universities (including Basel and Strasbourg), which makes it possible to complete courses at all participating universities. Freiburg is part of the multinational Epicur network.

Exchange universities for stay abroads

Ecole Normale Superieure de Lyon, Frankreich; Trinity College Dublin, Irland; Helsingin Yliopisto, Finnland; Université Paris Diderot, Paris 7, Frankreich; Universitetet i Bergen, Norwegen; Università degli Studi Roma Tre, Italien; Universitat de Barcelona, Spanien; Orta Dogu Teknik Üniversitesi, Türkei; Göteborgs Universitet, Schweden.

Special features regarding the equipment

Internal servers, several computer pools for students. Access to mainframes in the computer centre. Large specialist library (> 40,000 books,; > 10,000 e-books, online access to almost 2,000 specialist journals), specialisations in didactics, logic, stochastics. Access to MathSciNet and Zentralblatt.

Special features regarding research activities

DFG Research Group "Mathematical Statistics in the Information Age – Statistical Efficiency and Computational Feasibility" in Freiburg. Participation in the Collaborative Research Centre "Small Data" in Freiburg (three PIs from mathematics), participation in the Cluster of Excellence livMatS, in the Freiburg Centre for Data Analysis and Modelling (FDM); at the Freiburg Institute of Advanced Studies (FRIAS) and at the Freiburg Centre for Interactive Materials and Bioinspired Technologies (FIT).

Other special features

The university offers a Sustainability Certificate.
