Research and teaching are closely linked, there is interaction beyond the boundaries of the institute and faculty on a daily basis. Basic and applied research are carried out to an equal extent frequently with the involvement of the students. Focus areas lie in the fields of Cyber-Physical Systems, Cognitive Technical Systems and Information Systems, as well as Bioinformatics. Areas of excellence (CIBSS – Centre for Integrative Biological Signal Studies) as well as cooperations with Fraunhofer Institutes offer an ideal environment. One of 17 ELLIS Centres of Excellence for Machine Learning in Europe.
