Further information provided by the department

Special features regarding teaching

The department and institute have mentoring programmes, part-time degree courses, a learning centre, a departmental library and a work placement exchange (database). The TU offers a writing centre and the option of writing guidance training. In all German Studies degrees, there is the option of completing a work placement and/or collaborating on a project. The comparatively small institute with a manageable number of students offers an unusually good support ratio for the subject of German Studies. The TU environment makes interdisciplinary work possible.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The department has partnerships with over 40 universities worldwide and the institute also offers numerous study places, primarily in Europe (e.g. Sweden, Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Italy, Turkey). The department welcomes and advises students from abroad who would like to study in the department as exchange students or complete a full degree course as international students. The MA in German Linguistics in particular has a high proportion of international students.

Special features regarding the equipment

The department has its own CIP computer room, which is regularly used by the Institute for Linguistics and Literary Studies for classes. The department and institute operate servers of their own with corpora and specific software for use in teaching and research; the institute also has two digital labs. The institute collaborates closely with Computer Science in research and instruction.

Special features regarding research activities

The department is actively involved in research, which is reflected in numerous third-party-funded projects for supporting individuals and collaborations, in long-term projects and in Research Training Groups. The key interdisciplinary research areas research of the department are Digital Humanities, Urban Research and Energy Transition. Projects currently being undertaken at the institute include Onomastics, Editions, Digital Literary Studies, Multilingualism and Scientific Communication. The students benefit from research-based courses as well as the possibility of being directly involved in projects.

Other special features

The Institute for Language and Literary Studies offers prospective students the option of Online Self Assessment (OSA) in the form of an automated online questionnaire in order to be able to test their aptitude for the degree course, and in particular for a German Studies degree course, at an early stage. This is supplemented by information services in the social media (e.g. online consultation hours via WhatsApp).
