Special features regarding teaching

In teaching, quantitative approaches are predominantly, though not exclusively, used. This results from the knowledge that complex, interdependent economic facts can often be described and communicated more precisely using mathematical methods. In the Bachelor and Master Economics, the three contents of Business Administration, Economics and Methodology are pursued almost equally. With the two English-language Master´s degree programmes in Quantitative Economics and Data Science and the Master in Statistical Sciences, a further quantitative specialisation is set in the course.

Special features regarding the international orientation

There are numerous international collaborations with various European universities. Credits earned at a university abroad can be recognised and easily integrated into the Bachelor or Master's degree courses by selecting special modules. The Master's degree in Economics includes the International Management and Economics profile, which was specially designed for stays abroad. In the Master’s in Quantitative Economics, the Master's thesis can be supervised by an examiner in a partner university abroad (International Track profile).

Exchange universities for stay abroads

Universidad de Alicante (Spanien), Università Politecnica delle Marche Ancona (Italien), Università di Bologna (Italien), University of Genua (Italien), Università di Pisa (Italien), ELTE Univerität Budapest (Ungarn), University of Copenhagen (Dänemark),Örebro University (Schweden), ESC Rennes School of Business (Frankreich), Université Paris-Est Créteil(Frankreich)

Special features regarding the equipment

Excellent library, classrooms with excellent technical media (some with transmission equipment for hybrid teaching), very good hardware and software equipment in all areas, electronic course catalogue and exam administration, free WiFi throughout for students, in addition there are approx. 300 public computer workstations with direct internet access and many (statistics) software programmes (R, SPSS, STATA, Maple, Python and many more) as well as personal advice to students who are having difficulty setting up and accessing the programmes.

Special features regarding research activities

An analytical-quantitative approach characterises the majority of the faculty's research projects and focus areas, which have a large network of national and international research partners. Established research focuses include "Computational Economics" and "Robust Decision Making under Uncertainty" as well as social and economic policy-oriented research on "Distribution, Inequality and Heterogeneity". Research is also being carried out on the subject of "Economic effects of smart products and smart systems".

Support for founders

The junior professorship for start-up management / gender in the start-up process, which has existed since WS 17/18, deals with this topic in research and teaching and offers the start-up management module, which can be attended as part of the so-called individual supplementation of Bachelor and Master students from all faculties. Here, students acquire basic subject-specific and methodological skills in start-up management. You will get an overview of central requirements in the start-up process as well as possible "tools" or alternative approaches and an insight into start-up practice.

Other special features

The faculty is committed to familiarising young high performers at an early stage of life with the region and its companies through its programme Best Undergraduates to Bielefeld University (BU2BU) in cooperation with companies in the Ostwestfalen-Lippe region. In September 2015, the endowed chair for Business Administration was occupied by family businesses. The faculty has close personal ties to the Institute for Mathematical Economic Research (IMW). There is a university-wide sustainability fund for projects related to sustainability on the campus of Bielefeld University.
