Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

A particular focus is on the practical training of students in the laboratory (about 50%). In addition to the traditional disciplines (inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry), both theoretical and practical elements in biochemistry and modern instrumental analytical chemistry are offered as special teaching content. Modern methods such as AI are also included in teaching. This breadth of expertise enables students to specialise based on excellent knowledge and practical experience in the respective master's degree programmes.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

In the first year of study, students take four compulsory elective modules, which are offered in blocks of eight weeks each. This allows students to study a specific field of research from a very broad research landscape during this period. In the third study semester, many students complete the heavily research-oriented project module abroad – without extending the duration of studies. In the context of collaborations (internships/final theses), students can work together with industry partners and thus gain further experience.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Stays abroad are recommended as part of the Master's phase and (initial) contact with the foreign university can be made via the professors. As a rule, stays abroad can be completed without an extension of study time. Funding can be obtained in the form of scholarships, e.g. DAAD, or as part of an Erasmus grant.

Special features regarding the equipment

The department offers modern chemical-analytical equipment of the highest standard, which is accessible to all the units of the department. Students and doctoral candidates can take part in analysis service seminars as well as use modern major instrumentation to make their own measurements. Large-scale equipment centres are present in the fields of NMR and mass spectrometry. The research database SciFinder and other databases are also available to students.

Special features regarding research activities

In the BSc degree programmes, students complete their first research project as a part of their bachelor's thesis. In the MSc Chemistry and Business Chemistry, they can determine the direction of their own research through compulsory elective modules and pursue it further, among other things, as part of their Master's thesis. This is also possible in the areas of pharmacy or battery research at the Helmholz Institute Münster. In the MSc Food Chemistry, students complete a project module as well as the master's thesis as research work in-house, or, for example, in cooperation with testing laboratories, offices in Germany and abroad, or international universities

Other special features

In particular, battery research is offered as a compulsory elective module in the MSc of Chemistry and Business Chemistry. In the catalysis chemistry module, students develop new resource-saving and sustainable chemical synthesis routes. Both modules can be go more in-depth in relevant projects/theses that are relevant for a given degree-course. Food chemistry focuses on food safety and the detection of contaminants in food. In the Master's degree programme, students make an important contribution to the consumer safety of tomorrow through research projects/theses.
