Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Degree courses are reviewed as part of the system accreditation; sufficient lab workstations and good staff-student ratio; Close integration of theory with practice; short duration of studies; various areas of specialisation; "Mobiles digitales Bachelor-Studium Chemie" (Mobile digital Bachelor's degree course in Chemistry) project; access to Chemistry-related software and databases; close collaboration with the young chemists' forum for career orientation; Teacher training: highly practice-based and experimental teaching in subject-specific didactics (experimental lecture; school experiments; practical school exercises; practical semester).

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Degree courses are reviewed as part of the system accreditation; Excellent student-teacher ratio; Various opportunities for thematic specialisation, including for theses; Close on-site cooperation with non-university research institutions, which also provides an opportunity to complete internships and write final theses.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The sixth semester in the Bachelor's degree course is suitable as a mobility window; support for completing final theses abroad (hitherto e.g. in Japan, Canada, the USA, the Czech Republic, France); support and guidance for scholarship applications for visits abroad.

Special features regarding the equipment

Modern equipment for practical workstations; the latest instrumental equipment in all areas, also used for modern research-based teaching; generously dimensioned, modern computer pools for students, which can be used at any time; new media (e.g. smart boards; computer-aided experimental set-ups) for teacher training students.; Availability of SciFinder; ChemDraw campus license.

Special features regarding research activities

Cooperation with non-university research institutions in graduate schools (Macromolecular Bioscience, Multiscale Biosystems, Functional Surfaces in Physics and Chemistry); Participation in the "School of Analytical Science Adlershof" in the Excellence Initiative; Centre for Innovation Competence:: Innovative fibre-optic spectroscopy and sensor technology; Participation in structured projects of the German Research Foundation (Materials Science; Theoretical Chemistry); Participation of Didactics of Chemistry in the programme "Qualitätsoffensive Lehrerbildung - PSI Potsdam" (Quality initiative in teacher training - PSI Potsdam).

Other special features

As part of the chemistry degree-programme, key competencies are predominantly taught in a subject-integrated manner. The open STEMroom—an initiative of the faculty for mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, and technology—offers students the opportunity to consult student tutors during fixed hours as needed and to receive support with regard to any subject-specific or extra-curricular questions. The Institute of Chemistry supports the Young Chemists Network (JCF) in organising the series on professional chemists, in which chemists working in the field report on topics such as job search, career entry and everyday life.
