Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The bachelor's degree programmes offered by the Faculty of Chemistry provide the foundation for contributing to the solution of future issues, e.g. in the areas of health, nutrition, mobility, the environment, and sustainability. Depending on the degree programme, students also learn skills related to biochemistry, toxicology, technical chemistry, and theoretical chemistry. Extensive support during chemistry internships and personal contact between students and lecturers are important to us.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

The master's degree programmes in chemistry and industrial chemistry have an extensive range of course offerings that allow students to select an individual specialisation. The master´s degree programme in food chemistry has both a practical focus (in the form of lectures) as well as a research focus thanks to the internships that are offered. Students can focus on toxicology. The master's degree programme in toxicology is highly practical thanks to lectures and industry internships.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The Erasmus coordinator of the Department of Chemistry at RPTU offers regular information events on opportunities for studying abroad, e.g. as part of an Erasmus internship in the chemistry degree courses. Contact details and further information are available on the website of the Department of Chemistry (chem.rptu.de) under the heading Study programmes/international study.

Special features regarding the equipment

Databases: SciFinder; Large-scale equipment: ESR spectrometer; Solid-state NMR spectrometer; NMR spectrometer ( 200/400 MHz); NMR spectrometer with HPLC equipment (600 MHz); IR spectrometer; Raman spectrometer; Single crystal diffractometer; MALDI mass spectrometer, mass spectrometer, exact mass determination, GC and solids application system; HPLC-MS/MS; UPLC-qToF setup; Confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM); Scanning electron microscope; Confocal laser microscope; Femtosecond laser; UV/Vis/IR laser system; SQUID Magnetometer; Computer equipment

Special features regarding research activities

The research focuses on the interdisciplinary fields of "Resource Efficiency and Sustainable Development", "Interactions of Light, Spin and Matter" and "Life Sciences and Bioanalytics". See the Research section for details. As part of the research initiative (FI) of the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate (profile areas of the FI: BioComp, State Research Centre Optimas / Potential range of FI: Nanokat), the department is involved in various projects. The research institution in the area is the Leibniz Institute for Composites (IVW).

Other special features

Students from various degree-courses and departments of the RPTU plan and organise a symposium on sustainability for students of upper secondary school, where aspects of sustainability are discussed in experimental lectures and poster sessions. In support of this, keynote speeches are held by lecturers from various departments of the RPTU on selected topics related to sustainability over the course of the semester.
