Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The bachelor's degree programme in chemistry combines basic theory with modern practice and prepares students for the research-oriented and English-language master's degree programme in chemistry. One of the major strengths of the programme is the very good support that students receive thanks to the relatively small ratio of students to professors in the Chemistry Faculty. In addition to the standard student advice and counselling, lecturers can provide students with confidential assistance to mediate conflicts.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

This is an international master's degree programme, and courses and examinations are held in English. Graduates can find positions on the international labour market and at research institutes. There is a very good teacher-student ratio here, too.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The department has a strong international focus and offers an English-language master's degree programme in chemistry and an English-language master's degree programme in nanoscience and nanotechnology. In the department, many international students study in the Master’s degree programme and doctoral programmes. The work groups in the department regularly host international guest researchers and work on international research projects.

Special features regarding the equipment

The Department of Chemistry and Biology has modern technical equipment and instruments, a precision mechanical workshop and a glass blower. In addition, the Device Centre for Microanalysis and Nanoanalysis has state-of-the-art large-scale equipment for micro- and nanoanalysis, which are available to a wide range of users.

Special features regarding research activities

The work groups in the department are involved in national and international research projects. Similarly, work groups collaborate at the Cµ research centre at the University of Siegen: Cµ investigates how chemical processes take place on microscopic and nanoscopic scales and at interfaces. Likewise, novel materials, methods and systems for micro- and nanochemistry are developed and this knowledge is used to design novel sensory interfaces and develop new diagnostic approaches, e.g. to detect bacterial and fungal contamination.

Other special features

The Equal Opportunities Office of the University of Siegen supports students in all aspects of equality and promotes the career development of young female scientists through the FraMeS programme. Female doctoral candidates also have access to scholarships as transitional funding.
