Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

graduates of the undergraduate Bachelor's degree course in Chemistry at Universität des Saarlandes can choose between three different Master's courses (Chemistry, Biotechnology, Materials Chemistry) depending on the research focus. The teacher training courses have a high proportion of practically oriented courses, in particular in the field of subject-related Didactics. In general, the Department of Chemistry encourages close contact between the students and assistant professors of the department.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Wide range of compulsory elective courses, providing many specialisation options. Cooperation with the university-affiliated institutes HIPS and INM.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Universität des Saarlandes is one of the universities in Germany with the highest proportion of foreign students. A special relationship exists with the neighbouring country of France. The Department of Chemistry offers a Bachelor's degree course in Chemistry in two German-French variants. There is also a German-French variant of the Master's degree course in Chemistry. There are also particularly close ties to the East China University of Science and Technology in Shanghai. A German-Korean partnership is currently being initiated in the Master's degree programme in Materials Chemistry.

Special features regarding the equipment

The Department of Chemistry at Saarland University has a modern new practicals laboratory for inorganic chemistry, as well as modern laboratories in renovated buildings in the fields of Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. The equipment pool for teaching is continuously modernised using compensation funds (previously tuition fees). The faculty has a CIP pool. WiFi is available on the entire campus. A school student laboratory is available for teacher training. Widespread use of Office 365 / Microsoft Teams for teaching support.

Special features regarding research activities

The research of the Department of Chemistry at Universität des Saarlandes focuses on the Chemical/Biological/Biomedical field, the Chemical/Materials Science field as well as on Synthetic Chemistry. The Chemistry department therewith specialises in the university's main focus areas NanoBioMed and materials research.

Other special features

The Department of Chemistry cooperates with the research institutes located on the campus, Institute of New Materials and Korea Institute of Science and Technology. Staff members of the institutes are involved in teaching, and students are given additional attractive opportunities, particularly for degree theses.
