Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

An essential feature of the bachelor's degree programme is to clarify the unity of chemistry as a subject. Chemistry has many different sub-areas with their own work techniques and characteristics. The interrelationships of the sub-areas are discussed throughout the bachelor's degree programme in chemistry. There is a powerful web-based learning platform (LMS), which has been extended with special modifications for chemistry, e.g. additional assessment options.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

"Green chemistry" is a particular focus. This focus is further promoted by the involvement of the Chemical Invention Factory (CIF) and an honorary professorship on this topic. Entrepreneurship is promoted in this area as well. There is a powerful web-based learning platform (LMS), which has been extended with special modifications for chemistry, e.g. additional assessment options. There are compulsory events on equal opportunities and diversity as well as anti-bias.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Faculty II - Mathematics and Natural Sciences has numerous ERASMUS+ cooperations in the field of chemistry. Chemistry students can spend one or two semesters in Great Britain, Spain, France, Italy, Poland or Austria with an ERASMUS+ scholarship and additional special support, if necessary, during their studies. In addition, TU Berlin cooperates with more than 80 universities in non-European countries. As part of the bilateral cooperation, students have the opportunity to study abroad without having to pay tuition fees.

Special features regarding the equipment

The SciFinder database is available to all employees and students. For research, the institute provides comprehensive analytical methods with centralised centres for NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and X-ray structure analysis. Further measuring facilities offer IR, UV/Vis and elemental analyses. The Centre for Electron Microscopy with scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, focused ion beam, microprobe and light microscopy at TU Berlin can also be used.

Special features regarding research activities

Cluster of Excellence UniSysCat; Chemical Invention Factory (CIF); GreenChem (project in the funding line "T!Space – Transfer spaces for the future of regions"); Participation in collaborative projects: DFG projects (CRC 1078, CRC 1349, Priority Programmes SPP 2240 and 2363), BMBF projects (POROSIL, AEMready, TransHyDE AmmoRef, DIALYSORB, H2Mare, H2Giga), EU projects (SELECTCO2, EcoFuel); Participation in BasCat - UniCat BASF JointLab; Professorships from external research institutions: Research Institute for Molecular Pharmacology (FMP), Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB) and Leibniz Institute for Crystal Growth (IKZ)

Other special features

TU Berlin has a diversity strategy and a teaching mission statement in which diversity and sustainability are explicitly addressed. These requirements are reviewed as part of the quality assurance processes and contribute to the further development of the degree programmes. The Faculty II - Mathematics and Natural Sciences has also set up a Commission for Diversity and Equal Opportunity, in which all status groups are represented and which decides on strategic orientation and measures in these areas.
