Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

In addition to a BSc degree course in Chemistry with a focus on Biochemistry or Macromolecular Chemistry, Universität Freiburg offers the bi-national "Regio Chimica" degree course in cooperation with the University of Mulhouse (FR). The Master's degree programme in Chemistry offers broad training, interdisciplinary and specialised courses include "Biochemistry and Biophysics" as well as the "Sustainable Materials" course, which focuses on sustainable materials science with three distinct areas (functional materials, polymer sciences national and international with Strasbourg).

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

All of the faculty's Master's degree programmes are closely connected with the university's two clusters of excellence (CIBSS and livMatS), offer excellent opportunities to think outside the box in the master's labs, and provide excellent opportunities for interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research in the university's FMF and FIT material research centres, as well as in the Fraunhofer institutes in Freiburg, especially for those who subsequently pursue a doctorate.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The department offers the "Regio Chemica" BSc degree course together with the University of Mulhouse (FR). Students spend the 1st year in Mulhouse, the 2nd year in Freiburg and the 3rd year at whichever of the two universities they prefer. The MSc degree courses "Biochemistry and Biophysics" and "Sustainable Materials – Polymer Science" each have an international element supported by the University of Strasbourg (FR). The department encourages students to stay abroad and will recognise the credits achieved there after prior consultation.

Special features regarding the equipment

Together with other faculties at Universität Freiburg, the department operates a managed equipment pool for "magnetic resonance spectroscopy" including ESR, analytical and imaging NMR spectrometers. The equipment focuses on X-ray structural analysis, mass spectrometry, electron microscopy and syntheses automation. A broad spectrum of apparatus-based analytical procedures and a CIP computer room are available as part of the teaching. The equipment facilities at the FMF and the FIT are first-rate facilities with a material orientation.

Special features regarding research activities

The faculty participates in research alliances such as the two Clusters of Excellence CIBSS and livMatS (Spokesperson from Chemistry), the CRC "Medical Epigenetics", the Priority Programme "Epigenetic Regulation", the Clinical Research Unit "Polycystic Kidney Disease" and the Research Training Group "Soft Matter", "Functional Cofactor Diversity" and "Transport in and through Membranes". Members of the faculty participate in the Freiburg Materials Research Centre (FMF) and the FIT – Freiburg Centre for Interactive Materials and Bioinspired Technologies with excellent equipment facilities.

Other special features

There is a lecture cycle on sustainability within the department. With the livMatS Cluster and the FMF and FIT material research centres, questions of sustainability technologies for energy conversion and storage (batteries, PV, hydrogen P2X and fuel cells) and their evaluation are being researched, reinforced by many collaborations in the field with Fraunhofer and INATECH in the technical faculty. The university offers a "Sustainability" certificate which is evaluated with 2 ECTS points and is recognized in the degree programmes.
