Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

At more than 50%, the Bachelor's degree programme in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology offers a high proportion of practical training. The Bachelor's degree programme offers an extensive range of subjects, preparing students for the consecutive Master´s degree programmes more generally in the first two years and more specifically in the third year with freely selectable compulsory elective modules. The degree programme is subject to a quality assurance system.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

The Master's degree programme is internationally and research-oriented and, at about 75%, has a very high proportion of practical training. During the practicals, students gain deep insight into the current research of their lecturers. Teachers from non-university research institutions (especially the Leibniz Institutes FLI and HKI) offer numerous courses and supervise theses. The degree programme is subject to a quality assurance system.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The English-language master's degree programmes attract many international students who are prepared for studying in the department through welcoming organisations and information events. Student mentors help international students find housing or deal with bureaucratic procedures. Mobility windows and moderate recognition procedures guarantee students enrolled in Jena a simplified procedure for international studies.

Special features regarding research activities

The research in the Faculty of Life and Biosciences focuses on three areas: regulation of age-associated processes, microbial communication, and biodiversity and evolution. There is a close cooperation between the non-university research institutes (e.g. HKI and FLI) and the Friedrich Schiller University. Integration into ongoing research projects (e.g. IMPULS as well as CRCs ChemBioSys, Funginet and Polytarget) offers excellent conditions for internships, the preparation of theses and a subsequent doctoral phase.

Other special features

Particularly noteworthy are the numerous CRCs, such as AquaDiva, ChemBioSys, FungiNet, and Polytarget, the Balance of the Microverse cluster of excellence, and the IMPLULS network for research on aging. In addition, close cooperation with the Leibniz Institutes HKI, FLI and IPHT; JenOptik and Zeiss enables the development of the latest applications, for example, in the fields of photonics and microscopy, for biological and biomedical research.
