Special features regarding teaching

Project and research-oriented teaching even in the bachelor's degree: e.g. through the PROMOTE project in which several Chairs collaborate to offer project topics with academic supervision, which are then worked on by interdisciplinary teams with members from different stages of their academic studies. When completing their work, students are involved in current research projects. This is supported by a quality assurance concept for instruction, which provides for regular information-sharing and ideas in the academic affairs committee and faculty council in order to improve instruction. The Deps. Of MSF and IEF have an equal share in teaching.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The department is part of the EMship Consortium in the field of maritime systems. The phases of the compulsory elective modules offer students in almost all degree courses the option of spending part of the course abroad without needing to extend the length of the course. Teaching and learning agreements are concluded in advance for this purpose. Foreign work placements can also be recognised for the compulsory placements. Students are supported by the Erasmus officers. Modules held in English. Exchange as part of the DAAD Eastern Partnerships.

Special features regarding the equipment

Excellent computer equipment thanks to a sufficient number of PC rooms and workstation rooms, WiFi in all buildings; state-of-the-art research laboratories that are always equipped promptly for work on the latest research topics; Machinery laboratory with state-of-the-art engine test benches; flow channel with longitudinal towing tank and run channel as well as wind tunnels; MRT; structural mechanics laboratory with servo-hydraulic and high-frequency technology; New research hall with acoustic chamber and pressure tank (600 bar); Laboratory for autonomous robotics; Laboratory for hybrid vehicle drives; Cleanroom and laboratory for additive manufacturing.

Special features regarding research activities

When completing their work (such as project assignments, course work or the Bachelor's and Master's theses), students are directly involved in current research projects. Numerous large research projects to which the students themselves are able to contribute, not only as part of compulsory student work but also by working as student and academic assistants. High level of interdisciplinary work thanks to intensive interdisciplinary collaboration with the non-university institutes Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology, Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research, KATALYSE Institut, Baltic Sea Research Institute

Support for founders

Support for professors as mentors for business start-ups, e.g. Exist; Mentoring also for participation in innovation and idea competitions

Other special features

The work placement office at the faculty is available to answer any questions regarding industry work placements. Other advantages: Close proximity to the library, student halls of residence and refectory; an extensive sports programme with over 70 sports at low cost; and, given the proximity to the sea, you also have the possibility of obtaining a sailing or surfing certificate. Last but not least, one particular advantage should be highlighted again: namely that the faculty is one of a total of 9 faculties at Universität Rostock, which means an interdisciplinary approach is possible for all teaching and research.
