Special features regarding teaching

Teaching in both courses is characterised by the close integration of fundamentals, specialisation and application. In particular, some advanced lectures are held by external lecturers from industry and thus have a high relevance for application. Furthermore, the contents of all courses in a project are applied and linked to a real problem in both courses of study. As a result, the system concept is also in the foreground, with individual deepening. There are interdisciplinary economic and legal competences as well.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Some 40% of students and 20% of employees come from abroad. Cooperations in research, teaching and student exchanges exist with around 160 partner institutions. In several degree courses, Double Degree Agreements with partner institutions have already been accredited. The International Centre is a central point of contact for international affairs, language and cross-cultural skills. It helps teachers, researchers, students and employees prepare, plan and execute cooperation activities and stays abroad.

Special features regarding the equipment

Battery laboratory with equipment for impedance spectroscopy, high-current electrical pulse generation, climate chambers and furnace in the Battery and Sensor Test Center and Research Center Energy Storage Technologies (EST); flywheel-based, battery-based and capacitor-based energy storage systems; ‘Active distribution grids’ network laboratory for the investigation of converter-dominated grids; Test benches for drive trains (vibration analysis, optimised control, ...); high-voltage facility; Test benches for regenerative electrical energy engineering; High-performance computer for use in modelling energy systems

Special features regarding research activities

Electrical energy system: Integrating systems for energy generation, storage and usage into the energy system (e.g. heat pumps, electric vehicles); Thermal energy system: Improving processes for the combustion of conventional and sustainable fuels (e.g. natural gas and hydrogen); Machinery & converter technology: Transferring the properties of electrical machines to intelligent converters; Energy Storage Technology: Security and reliability of electrochemical energy storage at the cell, module and system level

Support for founders

The start-up service at TU Clausthal advises and informs interested students and employees at TU Clausthal on the topic of business start-ups, with a diverse range of events to impart innovation and start-up skills. Whether developing a business idea, developing a business plan, with information about funding opportunities and further training or when brokering suitable partners: The start-up service at TU Clausthal supports interested parties in all phases of the start-up project – from the idea to the successful start-up.

Other special features

Part of the research field in ‘Sustainable Energy Systems’: multidisciplinary research in the fields of materials science, physical technologies, energy-system technology and process engineering, as well as law and economics for use in interlinking the sectors of electricity, heat, transport and industry as part of a decarbonised energy system. Bundled in research centres: Energy Research Center of Lower Saxony (EFZN), Research Center Energy Storage Technologies (EST), Clausthal Research Center for Environmental Technologies (CUTEC), Drilling Simulator Celle (DS), Simulation Science Center (SWZ)
